A verdict “Suicide during fit of temporary insanity" was returned at an inquest held in Leeds yesterday on Charles Halstead Cawthron (68), painter, of Westbourne Place, Dewsbury Road, whose body was found by a park ranger in the Waterloo Lake at Roundhay Park on Thursday afternoon. Percy Cawthron. the son of the dead man, said his father had been missing for three weeks. He went out one morning, and said would be home to dinner, but he never returned. He had lost his wife in November, 1922. and this had made him so depressed that he had never been the same since. A note, dated May 30, was found on the body, which, said the Deputy Coroner (Mr. J. B. Clarke), seemed to show that Cawthron had left home with the express purpose of committing suicide. A receipt for the expenses incurred at his wife’s funeral and some letters of condolence were also found in his possession.13 Charles was buried on 23 June 1924 at St Mary, Beeston, Yorkshire, England.12

Appears in a newspaper article on on 6 November 1915 at at Nelson, Lancashire, England, SHOCKING DISCOVERY AT BRIERFIELD GASWORKS
NELSON MAN'S TRAGIC DEATH
Yesterday afternoon, a man named William Routledge Edgar (45), living at 74, Derby Street, Nelson, met with a terrible death at the Nelson Corporation Gasworks, at Brierfield. Deceased, who was employed as a lamplighter and general labourer at the works, was missed during the afternoon, A search being made, his shovel was found near one the coke hoppers. Subsequently his body was discovered in the receptacle. Edgar was completely engulfed in the coke, the body being recovered by opening the shoot at the bottom of the hopper. How he got there is a mystery; It was part of his duties to attend to the carts as they came in, and shovel the coke into an elevator, which carried it to the hopper, from which the carts are filled. The receptacle contained breeze or small coke, and it is assumed that for some reason or other deceased climbed on to the top the coke, in which a hole might have been formed through drawing, and that it gave way beneath his weight, the sides caving in. A doctor who was called in when the body was recovered expressed the opinion that death had taken place two hours earlier.3
