At the Rochdale Borough Matrimonial court on Monday, before Mr. F Crompton (in the chair) and Mr. E. Noble, application was made by Mr. J Bright Clegg on behalf of Rose Halstead of 33 Canon Street for a Maintenance order against Ernest Halstead, a coal carter now residing at 77 Marlborough Street, Oldham, on the grounds of desertion and wilful neglect to maintain. The applicant stated that she married Halstead in May 1919, and there were six children two now being under sixteen years of age. In April last he left home following a disagreement, and had since sent her five weekly payments of 10s. Halstead asserted that he had been “put out of the house,” and declared that he was not prepared to return. Following his statement that he was not now working, evidence was given by P.C. Gittins that the employers of the respondent were annoyed that he had left work of his own accord, and that they expected him to return. The Chairman said they were satisfied there had been a failure to maintain, and granted an order for payment of 5s. weekly for the applicant and 10s. weekly for each of the two children.3

Fatal Injuries in Darkened Home
An inquest was conducted by the County Coroner (Mr. Stanley Turner) at the Coroner’s Court, Fleece Street, on Monday afternoon, relative to the death of Mrs. Ellen Halstead, aged 46 years, of 46 Daniel Fold, Spotland, who died at the Rochdale Infirmary on Friday following injuries received at her home two days previously.
Evidence of identity was given by the deceased’s sister, Mrs. Doris Isherwood, of 64 Church Street, Rochdale. They had lived together at 46 Daniel Fold and early on Wednesday morning witness, who slept down stairs, was awakened by a thud and found her sister lying face downwards at the bottom of the stairs.
She was unconscious and assistance having been obtained the deceased was conveyed to the Infirmary, where she died on Friday.
Replying to the Coroner, witness said they were preparing to move from the house the following day, so there was no carpet on the stairs, which were straight but steep.
A daughter of the previous witness, also named Doris Isherwood, stated that she heard her aunt leave the bedroom early on Wednesday morning followed by the sound of a thud. The house was in darkness at the time and witness could not explain why her aunt had not switched on the stairs light on leaving the bedroom. From the position in which deceased was lying at the bottom of the stairs it appeared that she had slipped on the stairs and fallen heavily.
P.C. Walker spoke to an examination of the stairs, which were of the average kind with handrail fixture, and P.C. Mosely deposed to the removal to the Infirmary.
The Coroner stated that according to the medical report the deceased sustained injuries to the head, including a fracture of the skull, and it was apparent that these injuries were caused as a result of the fall down stairs. A verdict of Accidental death” was accordingly entered.5
