Charles HALSTED

#3614, b. 1834, d. 1909
Last Edited=28 Dec 2015
Research Note: In the 1841 census Charles is shown in the same household as a John CLEGG and his assumed wife Hannah. Also there are there assumed children Mary and John.

So is Charles a grandson?

In the 1851 census he is shown as a Servant of the same John and Ann CLEGG.

Research Note: Whilst from 1891 onwards she appears as Mrs HALSTED I can find no sign of a marriage between Charles and Margaret.
Charles HALSTED was born in 1834 at Thornhill, Yorkshire. He was the son of Martha HALSTEAD. Charles HALSTED was baptised on 6 April 1836 at St Michael & All Angels, Thornhill, Yorkshire.
In the census of 6 June 1841 at Hazelgrove, Whitley Uppse, Yorkshire, he was listed as aged 6 born in county.1 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Hazelgrove, Upper Whitley, Yorkshire, he was listed as an Agricultural Labourer, aged 14 born Thornhill, a servant of John CLEGG.2 In the census of 7 April 1861 at Old Winsey, Stox Moor, Shitlington, Yorkshire, he was listed as single, an Agricultural Labourer, aged 25 born Thornhill, a servant of Malin HANKS.3 In the census of 2 April 1871 at Lodging House, Sheffield Road, Barnsley, Yorkshire, he was listed as single, a Labourer, aged 36 born Thornhill, a Lodger.4
Charles married Margaret CHATHAM after 1871. Whilst researching another Charles Halstead i found this article in the Yorkshire Evening Post which explains why I could not find a marriage for them

TO RIGHT THE WRONG
WORKHOUSE INMATES WHO WISHED TO MARRY AT HUNSLET

The elaborate classification scheme adopted the Hunslet Board Guardians in their large workhouse situated on the outskirts of Rothwell, has led to dilemma. This dilemma arises out the provision cottages for aged and deserving couples. For from 20 to 30 years Charles Halstead and Margaret Chatham have been known in the parish of Middleton, near Leeds, as Mr. and Mrs. Halstead. They are both of age—72 years—and force of circumstances bent their steps towards Hunslet Workhouse. Previous to going there, however, they made an endeavour to right the wrong by asking the Vioar of Middleton to publish their banns. Before this could be effected Charles Halstead had entered the workhouse, and the Vicar of Middleton, therefore, placed the matter before the Vicar of Rothwell. The Vicar of Rothwell approached the master of the workhouse, and the master of the workhouse made application, yesterday, to the Hunslet Board of Guardians for permission for the Vicar of Rothwell to unite the aged couple in the bonds of holy matrimony. It was decided in a few minutes by tie Board not to entertain the application. So, after climbing the hill of life together, Darby and Joan must pass down their declining years practically alone, though probably only separated by the width of a brick wall.5 In the census of 3 April 1881 at Green Buildings, Hunslet, Yorkshire, he was listed as single, a General Labourer, aged 46 born Dewsbury, a Boarder of Margaret CHATHAM.6
In the census of 5 April 1891 at 9 Green Folds, Hunslet, Yorkshire, Charles was listed as aged 57 born Thornhill, the Head of Household; a Labourer at Coal Pit, living with his wife Margaret.7
In the census of 31 March 1901 at Quarry Cottage, Middleton, Yorkshire, Charles was listed as aged 65 born Dewsbury, the Head of Household; a Coal Screener at Colliery, living with his wife Margaret.8
Charles's death was registered in 1909 in the Hunslet registration district.9

Margaret CHATHAM

#3615, b. 1837, d. 1906
Last Edited=28 Dec 2015
Her married name was CHATHAM. Her married name was HALSTED.

Research Note: Whilst from 1891 onwards she appears as Mrs HALSTED I can find no sign of a marriage between Charles and Margaret.
Margaret CHATHAM was born in 1837 at Pocklington, Yorkshire.
Margaret married Charles HALSTED, son of Martha HALSTEAD, after 1871.

So, after climbing the hill of life together, Darby and Joan must pass down their declining years practically alone, though probably only separated by the width of a brick wall.1
In the census of 3 April 1881 at Green Buildings, Hunslet, Yorkshire, Margaret was listed as a widow, a Charwoman, aged 43 born Pocklington, the Head of Household.2
In the census of 5 April 1891 at 9 Green Folds, Hunslet, Yorkshire, she was listed as aged 53 born Pocklington, the wife of Charles HALSTED (a Labourer at Coal Pit, living with his wife Margaret.)3
In the census of 31 March 1901 at Quarry Cottage, Middleton, Yorkshire, she was listed as aged 64 born Pocklington, the wife of Charles HALSTED (a Coal Screener at Colliery, living with his wife Margaret.)4
Margaret's death was registered in 1906 in the Hunslet registration district.5

Research Note: CORNERED TOO FAST
Coroner Says Worsthorne Man was Negligent
"Death by misadventure" was the verdict by a Jury at a Burnley inquest yesterday, on Edwin Jones (39), coal dealer. Ormerod Street. Worsthorne. who died in hospital on Wednesday from abdominal injuries sustained when a motor lorry he was driving was involved in a collision with a wall in Salterforth Lane. Cliviger, the previous day.
The Coroner (Mr H. Ogden) said there was evidence of negligence and careless driving. Apparently Jones was travelling at such a speed that he took the corner too wide.
Fred Stanworth, coal dealer. Gorple-road, Worsthorne, said after a delivery Jones had a lemonade and a glass of beer at Mereclough. Jones was perfectly sober and fit to drive.
As they turned a corner in Salterforth Lane the lorry shot across the road and crashed into the wall. The only explanation he could give was that the road was wet. Witness was uninjured.
Mrs. Ethel Eastwood, of Higher Red Lees Road, Cliviger, said the lorry took the corner wide and appeared to go round at too fast speed.
The cause of death was internal injuries, probably due to Jones coming into violent contact with his steering wheel.4
