  	FATAL FALL AT MILNSBRIDGE At the London and North-Western Hotel, Longwood, yesterday afternoon, Mr. J. E. Hill, deputy coroner, held an enquiry into the circumstances touching the death of James William Holroyd (37), woollen spinner, of 7, George-street, Milnabridge, who died at 7-30 on Wednesday evening, from injuries received on Monday, at the Post Ofiice Hotel, Milnsbridge. Edmund Halstead, cloth presser, of Crosland Moor, brother-in-law of the deceased, gave evidence of identification. It was stated that the deceased's widow was unable to be present. Walter Leech, spinner, of Milnsbridge, said he was with the deceased at the Post Office Hotel, about 7 p.m. on Monday. They were having beer together, and deceased had only one glass in that house. He got up to speak to witness, and stumbled and fell. Witness fancied deceased came in contact with the stone floor with his head. He did not seem much worse after getting up, and remarking that he was going home witness went with him out of the house arm in arm. Both witness and deceased were " fresh." Deceased did not stop in the house five minutes after falling, but he had another drink of his beer before going. When they got next door to deceased's house deceased asked witness to go in there whilst he went on a necessary errand. Deceased had said that he would fetch some more beer to drink, but as he did not return within about 10 minutes, witness and others went to look for him and they found him in an out-building on the floor unconscious. The services of a doctor were then procured. Witness had been at the Post Office Hotel nearly all day. Deceased had not. He (deceased) was not sober when he got there, and the landlord did not, so far as witness knew, refuse to serve him with beer. Mr. Hogg, Deputy Chief Constable, who watched the proceedings, remarked that the coroner had covered the ground which he himself intended going over, so that it was now unnecessary for him to question witness. Dr. L. Parke, of Longwood, deposed that when he saw deceased early on Tuesday afternoon he found him suffering from complete paralysis of the left side. He was totally unconscious, his condition being due in all probability to fracture of the base of the skull which would be likely to be produced by such a fall aa witness had heard he had met with. Witness added that Dr. Shaw first saw deceased on Monday night. The Deputy-Coroner said he thought the jury would be justified in finding a verdict that deceased died from fracture of the base of the skull, resulting from an accidental fall. A Juror (Mr. G. Garfitt) — It is a case of unforeseen circumstances we cannot account for I think. The Deputy-Coroner — Well you can account for it. If he had not gone there, and had not had beer, he would probably have been alive to-day. The jury then returned a verdict of "Accidental death."
