  	REMEMBERENCE Writing from Esthonia, where he is in business, Mr. William Duckett wishes, through the "Morecambe Guardian," to be remembered to the many friends he has made during his visits here. His chief regret at the moment is that he hasn't been able to make the Journey here this year, but he is determined to rectify that omission next. Incidentally, his daughter Kathleen, is shortly to open new business premises in Clarence Street. At the moment, along with Mrs. W.   	BACK AT LAST. After many years in Esthonia—and you'll find it on a map of Europe—Mr. William Duckett has at last decided to spend the evening of his days in the land of his birth. For the present, at any rate, he is making Morecambe his place of residence, and there are more unlikely things that will eventually be his home. One day I must persuade him to tell "Guardian ", readers of his experiences in a country ' little known to us.

  	VIEW ON ESTHONIA Morecombe Man Who Lived There 15 Years WILL FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE It Is quite possible that by the time this appears in print the country in question will no longer exist, for it will probably have been incorporated in the German Reich. On the other hand. the Russians may have occupied it in order to aid their " oppressed" . minority. The country in question is Esthonia. a small state sandwiched between Russia on the one side, and Latvia on the other. Mr. William Duckett, of 26. Battismore Road. Morecambe, has lived in Esthonia for 15 years. He returned to Morecambe in the Easter of 1938. He told a "Guardian" reporter yesterday that Esthonia had an area about the size of Scotland. It has a population of about 1,750,000. and was formerly part of Russia. gaining its independence after the last war. A STRANGE MIXTURE. Its population is a strange mixture of Russians. Esthonians, and Germans, who live together in peace. The inhabitants are very patriotic, and it is Mr. Duckett's view 'that they would fight for their independence if invaded. They have only a small army of conscripts, who are ill-equipped for modern warfare. WENT THROUGH RUSSIAN REVOLUTION. Mr. Duckett, who was a weaving manager, left England in 1908 to go to Russia. For many years he lived in Moscow. and was in Russia at the time of the revolution. He returned to! England in 1918, and afterwards went out to Esthonia in 1923. He spent most of his time in Narva, a town of about 25,000 inhabitants and about five miles from the Russian frontier. The capital of the country is Tallinn, formerly Revel, a seaport on the Baltic, boasting a population of 130.000 inhabitants. This port would be of tremendous importance to Russia. providing her with a good outlet in the Baltic. It was from this port that the Polish submarine, for which Russian and German naval fleets are now searching, escaped, A DEMOCRACY Esthonia is a democracy. having a President. Its people are allowed to vote and have plenty of liberty of speech and action. "The country," said Mr. Duckett yesterday. "is mostly agricultural. The inhabitants are for the most part peasants. There is a bit of engineering and also an oil field owned by a British company. He agreed that at the present time this alone would be of great importance to Germany. "Its exports are chiefly eggs and butter." added Mr. Duckett. "These England cannot obtain now. The country is flat and very sparsely populated. There were only about flve English people in the town I was in."
