    • WEEK-END PILOT KILLED IN CRASH
      A Midland "week-end" pilot in a R.N.V.R. fighter squadron was killed yesterday when his plane a Seafire, crashed in a field near Glimorton, Leicestershire.
      The pilot. Lieut. Donald Halstead (29). of Penny Cottage. Knowle. was attempting an emergency landing His plane was completely wrecked and petrol-soaked debris was flung 75 yards.
      Flight of three
      Ten minutes before the crash he had taken off in a flight of three Seafire aircraft from Bramcote airfield, near Nuneaton.
      Lieut Halstead, who was the Midland representative of a Manchester textile firm had been flying with the R.N.V.R. for the past two years. Trained in America, he served with Wartime Fleet Air Arm Squadrons in the Mediterranean and the Pacific.

    • 'No Fire in Air Crash' Mystery
      When a Seaflre piloted by Lieutenant Donald Halstead (29). week-end flyer, of Penny Cottage. Knowle, Warwickshire. crashed in a field at Gilmorton on Sunday. ten minutes after taking off from Bramcote Royal Naval Air Station, it did not catch fire.
      At the inquest at Hinckley, yesterday, Mr. Tempest Bouskell. Coroner for South Leicestershire. asked Lieutenant Commander H. K. La Page. of Bramcote, the officer responsible for aircraft in 1833 Squadron: "Would not you have expected a fire after a crash like that?"
      Lieutenant Commander La Page: I was very surprised that there was not one. There should have been 200 gallons of petrol in the aircraft. The engine was hot, and I cannot account for the fact that there was no fire.
      Experienced Pilot
      Lieutenant Commander La Page. who said that the 'plane had been inspected before the flight, replied to a member of the jury that it had flown for 50 minutes the previous day.
      It was stated that Halstead was an experienced pilot. No message was received from his 'plane after he had become airborne. There was some cloud, but the weather was quite satisfactory for the type of flying to be done.
      Arthur Walter Hill, farmer. of Gilmorton. said that when he first heard the 'plane he formed the opinion from the noise of its engine that the pilot was stunting. He saw it upside down, heading east, and in no apparent difficulty.
      "I think this is a quite simple case from the point of view of the jury." said the Coroner. The jury did not retire to return their verdict of "Accidental death."
