An inquiry was held at the New Inn, Little Hutton, on Wednesday afternoon . before Mr. S. F. Butcher, district coroner, concerning the death of John Halstead. collier, of 23 Manchester Road East, Little Hulton, who died on Tuesday from injuries received at the Bridgewater Trustees Mosley Common Colliery on January the 9th. Mr Harrison, assistant inspector of mines, and Mr. G. Ridings, Manager of the colliery, were present Margaret Halstead, the widow said deceased was 38 years of age. On January 9h he was brought home suffering from severe injuries to his spine, and he had since been paralised in his body. He told witness that he was setting a sprag in the No. 4 pit when the coal suddenly came down and fell upon him. He did not impute blame to anyone, nor did he complain that his work was more dangerous than ordinary. Frederick Greenhalgh, of 147 Walkden Road, Walkden, said he was working with deceased on the 9th inst. Halstead had been trying for a quarter of an hour to pull some coal but could not do so, and he ultimately got a sprag to set in front of it. A lump of coal weighing about half a ton suddenly gave way and fell upon his chest, and witness, after liberating him, accompanied him home on the horse ambulance. By a juryman: Deceased was getting ready to set the sprag when the coal fell? A verdict of “Accidental death” was returned
