- NELSON WOMANS DEATH ON HOLIDAY
SINGULAR CASE IN YORKSHIRE.
An inquest was held by the North Yorkshire Coroner (Dr. Porter) at Welburn, near Malton, on Saturday night, on Annie Halstead (30), of Nelson, who died while on a visit to Welburn on Friday.
The evidence showed that the women was married and had two children, her husband being in Australia. On June 27 she arrived at Welburn, with a man from Nelson, and the two stayed in the village as Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson.
Evidence of identification was given by Elizabeth Tuke, mother, who said she had been informed that a few days before leaving Nelson Mrs. Halsteod had a miscarriage.
Robert Wilson. cashier, of Nelson, said that on June 27 Mrs. Halstead and he went on a visit to Welburn, where they had previously stayed as Mr. and Mrs. Steptenson. On the evening of their arrival Mrs. Halstead became ill, and laid down on the sofa. She asked witness to fetch a doctor, and he remained attendance until death took place on July 10th. Mr. Wilson told the jury that he did not know what was the matter with Mrs. Halstead. She had not been attended by doctor at Nelson, but her mother had been informed that she was ill three days before leaving Nelson.
Dr. Wright, of Welburn, was called in and attended the woman until her death. He and Dr. Tatlow, of Malton, who performed a post-mortem examination, said Mrs. Halstead's story of her illness was consistent with her condition. Death was due to septic poisoning.
After long inquiry the jury returned a verdict to the effect "that death due to septic poisoning, following miscarriage, but there was evidence to show how that was brought about.
