  • Notes 
    • The marriage of Emily to James is quite clear that she was a spinster and her father was Samuel HALSTEAD. However the birth certificates of her sons Herbert and Harry HALSTEAD both indicate that she was Emily WICKS and married to a James HALSTEAD. No trace can be found of a marriage or death of a James HALSTEAD nor can a marriage be found of a HALSTEAD to a WICKS.

      It is interesting to note that her aunt Susannah HALSTEAD, sister of her father Samuel HALSTEAD, married a Joseph WICKS. Emily appears with Joseph and Susannah in the 1861 census as a niece with both of her parents dying just after she was born and she quite possibly thought that they were her parents. I believe that she made up James HALSTEAD (an amalgamation of her true Surname and the given name of the person she was living with) to cover up the illigimate births.

      The new GRO birth indexes released in November 2016 show that there are two other children born in Marylebone with a mothers maiden name of WICKS - Ernest (1878-1879) and Francis Sidney (1882-?)

      In the 1881 census she is living with James BEECH as a lodger.
