  	Inquest at Eastbourne yesterday An inquest was held yesterday (Tuesday) at the Town Hall before the Deputy Coroner (Mr. B. Bedford. of Newhaven) on the body of Hartley Halstead. The jury included Messrs. D Dilly (foreman). G. Wiseman. D. T. Wilson, B. Holland. T. M. Dicker. A. Macpherson. Davis, B.W Alderton, Isaac Adams, Griggs, G. Bainbridge. and T. Hazell. Henry Gover. young man, said—l am a gardener and live at 7, Park Terrace. Deceased was a carpenter, and I had known him for about four months. He was 29 years old, unmarried, and worked for Mr. Taylor, the builder. At twenty minutes to one on Sunday afternoon he was on the Parade, and was taken into the Victoria Inn. He was afterwards brought home in the cab. He was very pale, and there was a sickly, deathly odour about him. He died four or five minutes before the doctor arrived. Deceased was not drunkard, and was not a moderate drinker. He was what I should call a heavy moderate drinker. Dr Charles Lenox Cunningham said—About twenty minutes to two on Sunday afternoon I was called to see deceased at 7 Park Terrace, Commercial Road. I found him lying on his back in his bed. He was quite dead, and it appeared that he had vomited. I made a post mortem examination last night. On opening the head in found considerable effusion beneath the anachroid membrane and the vessels very much distended with venous blood. The liver was consideraby enlarged and the stomach was distended with a large quantity of liquid. The heart was small and flabby and probably did not weigh one half the natural weight. On the right aide of the heart tha auricle and ventricle were gorged with blood. I attribute the cause of death to congestive apoplexy, due to defective action of the heart. The Coroner—Would the appearance of the heart lead you to suppose that the man had been guilty of alcoholic excess. Witness—Exactly. Ben Charles Hide (a boatman) and workman named Hollebon depoded to deceased falling in a fit near the Victoria Inn, and being removed in a cab to his borne. The jury verdict of "Death from congestive apoplexy"
