[4] Manchester Evening News - SOLDIER DID NOT INJURE HIS BROTHER
CHARLES THOMAS HOLSTEAD (31), a soldier, of Clarence-street, Cheetham, Manchester, who a week ago at Manchester City Police Court was remanded in custody on a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm on his brother, William Holstead, of Pimlett Street, Cheetham, was brought up again to-day and was released.
Detective-inspector Cotton, in asking the magistrates to permit the withdrawal of the charge, stated that it was due largely to a statement volunteered by Charles Holstead. The police were called in to deal with two men who were struggling. William’s throat was seriously cut, and Charles had said : "I did it with a razor.”
"It is since proved conclusively,” said Inspector Cotton, "that he could not have done it, but his own statement led to his detention.”
Miss Jalland, for Charles Holstead. said it was a foolish statement. The magistrates permitted the withdrawal of the charge.
