    • DEATH OF MR JOHN HALSTEAD
We sincerely regret to record the death of Mr. John Halstead which took place at his residence, Kellam Villas, early yesterday morning, at the age of 50 years. The deceased gentleman had been in falling health for some time, but, although it was recognised that his condition was critical, the end came somewhat sooner than was expected. Mr. Halstead, who was the chairman of directors in the firm of Messrs. John Halstead Ltd. was a Newark man, and had lived in the borough for the whole of his life. In public affairs his principal work was on the Newark Board of Guardians, of which he had been a member for some years. On the first occassion which he became a member he went in unoppossed but three years ago he successfully fought a contest in the North Ward. He did not seek re-election at the recent contests not particularly because he wished to retire, but owing to the fact that he was living outside the Union his residence being to the Southwell Union. He well acquainted with Poor Law work, and his influence was ever on the side of the poor and needy. who have undoubtedly lost one of their best friends. In religion Mr. Halstead was a Wesleyan, being a regular attendant at North End Chapel, where his genial presence will be much missed. Mr. Halstead married the widow of the late Mr. James Clutterbuck, and much sympathy will be felt her in her bereavement. The funeral takes place on Tuesday.
