    • COAL MERCHANTS AND RAILWAY COMPANIES.
      NOTTS AND LINCOLNSHIRE PROTEST
A meeting of the Notts and Lincolnshire Coal Trade Protection Society was held at the Ossington, Newark, yesterday, when Mr. S. Booth (Southwell) presided over a representative gathering, including amongst others, Mr John Halstead (Newark), Mr. W. H. Garton (Grantham), Mr. Clarke (Messrs. Williamson and Company, Stamford), Mr. J. C. Kew, J.P. (Newark), Mr. W. Vickers (Southwell), Messrs. Jesse Halstead, S. Ellis, H. Widdowson, James Widdison (Newark), etc. The principal business was to consider the new increase in the rates for coal, coke, etc-, just made by the railway companies, and the abolition of the allowances of 2cwls. per truck, for wastage from shunting operations, and loss in transit from colliery to customer.Important correspondence was read from the Bradford Coal Merchants Association, the coal merchants of the West Riding of Yorkshire, and Mr John Carrington, the secretary of the London Society of Coal Merchants, on the necessity for joint action by the coal trade of the country. In the discussion that ensued it was clear that the merchants resented what they termed a back-hand way of raising the rates of coal, and if any advance was justified they asked that it should be directly on the rate, and not affecting the weight per ton carried. It was pointed out that it was impossible
to make trucks weigh out under the 20cwt. net arrangement, which in affect added 5 per cent, to the charges by the company. A resolution proposed by Mr. W. H. Garton, and seconded by Mr. John Halstead was unanimously agreed to, that a formal protest be made to the Board of Trade, and that permission to send two delegates to a conference between the railway companies and the Board of Trade be asked for. It was further decided to send notices to the railway companies by individual members intimating that claims would be made on the companies for loss of coal in transit and short weight as they arose.
The secretary was asked to demand of the railway companies that competant and responsible persons should be placed in charge of the public weighing machines of the companies for the protection of the public and the trader.
Mr. Garton read correspondence, with certain collieries on the question of short weight, and inasmuch as the railways accepted the weight from colliery as correct it was held to be their duty to deliver that weight or be liable for the loss of it.
