Shubel Brush was an extensive land owner in Westchester County, New York,
and Greenwich and Stamford in Connecticut. He became an active Tory. His
entire property in both Westchester and Greenwich was sold under the Act
of Sequestration, and he and his family took refuge in New York City and
on Long Island. After the close of hostilities in 1783 the selectmen of
Stamford ordered him and his family to "depart from town and never
return." He then settled in Stanwich Parish of Greenwich.
The will of Shubel Brush, dated in Greenwich on 24 Dec 1799 and prbated 10
Apr 1800 is of interest as he alleged his real estate had been confiscated
by an illegal act. He claimed it as part of his estate and left the claim
to his sons in his will for its recovery. The Brush account fails to
state whether they had any success in this matter.
He named his wife, Christina; children, Samuel, Benjamin, James, John,
Edward, Ann, Mary, Chritina, and Betsey.
