Notes - When Thomas Lyon married Martha Johanna Winthrop he expected to
get the right to manage the affairs of her demented
step-father, Robert Feake. He was sorely disappointed when
William Hallett supplanted him and in protest he wrote a
remarkable letter to Martha's grandfather, Governor John
Winthrop. He referred to "my father being distracted,"
(referring to his wife's step-father's mental illness), "my
father Feake going away sodingly," (from sodden;
expressionless, dull, or stupid), and boldly accused his
mother-in-law of adultery: "she openly confesses that she is
married to him (William Hallett) and is with child."
It is certain that Elizabeth (Fones/Winthrop) Feake was
pregnant at this time, for she gave birth, probably towards the
end of 1648/49 to a child known thereafter as William Hallett,
Jr. The name precludes any suggestion that the child had been
conceived by her husband, Robert Feake as he was in London some
time after 1647.
Moreover, included in the Lyon corresondence cited above,
there is a letter dated 12 Feb 1648/49 addressed to her cousin
and erstwhile father-in-law, Governor John Winthrop, which is
signed by Elizabeth as Elizabeth Hallett, and also letters from
William Hallett to Governor Winthrop whom he calls kinsman,
thereby making it abudantly clear that William Hallett and
Elizabeth claimed to be husband and wife, though her then
current and legal husband, Robert Feake, was still very much
alive.
