    • OVERTAKING DANGERS
Sydney Halstead (50), a ’bus driver of Mizpah Street, Burnley, was fined 20s. for driving an omnibus in Halifax Road, Rochdale, on May 8th, without reasonable consideration for others. A further summons for driving without due care and attention was dismissed. - Superintendent French mentioned that as a police car was travelling in the direction of Rochdale near the Smallbridge Congregational Church, the driver saw approaching a horse-drawn vehicle, a salooncar and an omnibus. The last-named vehicle was attempting to overtake the other two, which were level, so that the road was blocked by three lines of traffic. The police signalled the defendant to pull up, and in doing so the omnibus collided with the front of the saloon car. - Evidence in corroboration was given by P.C. Brookes of the Rochdale County Police. Ephrain Brown, the driver of the horse and cart, and George Alfred Frost of Syke Farm, the driver of the saloon car.—The defendant pleaded not guilty and on oath said he considered that he had left sufficient space for oncoming traffic to pass The width of the road was thirty-two feet. There would have been no accident if he had not received a signal to slow down. In addition to the fine mentioned, the defendant was ordered to pay 12s. 6d witness costs.
