"Lemuel Holsted Jr was definitely in Searcy County by 1840. In the 1840 Searcy County census he is shown as single and between the age of twenty and thirty. He does not appear in the Searcy County tax records of 1839 but that may just mean he had not pchased property at that time. He was born 31 March 1818 in St Francois County, Missouri. He married Maranda Adams, daughter of Robert and Synthia Adams in 1840. His parents were Lemuel Holsted Sr and Nancy Burnham Holsted. Both Lemuel Sr and Nancy we born in North Carolina. Nancy was age sixty three in the 185 census so she must have been born in 1787. Lemuel Sr died before the 1850 census so no year of birth is available for him. He appears in the1830 St Francois census as being between 50 and and in the 1840 census as being between 60 and 70. Lemuel Sr and Nancy were married in Nashville, Tennessee area 9 July 1805 according to their marriage license.The marriage license can be found in Davidson County marriages, book 1.Nancy was the daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth Cartwright Burnham. Isaac was a soldier inthe Revolutionary War and was probably given land in the Nashville area for his war service. According to DAR records Isaac was born about 1750 in North Carolina. Lemuel Sr, Nancy, saac and Elizabeth wereall in St Francois County by about 1810. This area was just opening up and had only become part of the United Statesin1805 as a result of theLouisiana Purchase so they were among the very first settlers. Lemuel Sr was also a meer of the first circuit court in St Francois County in 1822. Lemuel Jr had several brothers and sisters. Amy, who married Wilson Williams 3 December 1840 and apparently moved to Kansas. It is known that a number of her children lived and died in Galen Kansas. Permelia (Emelia) born May 9, 1928, who married Addison Cunningham 13 November1845, died in December 21, 1911 and is buried at Festus, Missouri. Nancy Lucinda who married Alexander Cunningham 29 July 1847. Thomas who was age 24 in the 185 census and married Mary Caroline Hibbits 29 March 1855. Jarvis (aka James) who was age 33 inthe 1850 census and married Rebecca Hamilton 28 July 1847. Polly who is listed in the 1850 census as age 31.She was in the household with Thomas and Nancy in 1850. Also Benjamin, born 6 January 1815 who moved to Louisiana where he married Jane Frazier31 October 1844. Information on Lemuel Sr's family comes from marriage and census records, also on Permelia and Benjamin from their descendants. Nancy's brothrs and sisters wereThomas, Benjamin, Isaac, John who married Betsey Jackson, Mary who married Samuel Rhoades and Betsey who married Solomon ones. These were alllisted in Isaac Burham's will as his children along with Nancy Halsted. Also marriage licse's for several of them are in the Davidson County, TN marriage books. Isaac died before 1829 as based on the date his will was proved, 30 January 1829. Isaac applied for and received an invalid pension based "

His wife, Miranda filed for Confederate widows pension. Lemuel moved
to
Searcy Country about 1839 and was listed as single in the 1840 census.
He was
shot and killed in the spring of 1865, some say by jay-hawkers, after
some
gold he had.
