  Billy Merle (Bill) Halsted was born 16 September 1932 in Merkel (Taylor Co.), Tx. Bill graduated from Claude, (Armstrong County), Texas High School in May 1949. He was the only one of we four brothers to letter in sports in high school. He played guard on the Claude Football team, and would have been a star his senior year had he not have broken his back his junior year. Bill was a good athlete but he didn't have a chance to develop his skills because we were always working. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954, including a combat tour in Korea. He did visit us one time in Fairfield, California while we were stationed at Travis AFB, CA and his aircraft tender put in at the Oakland Navy Yard. While in the Navy he changed his name from Billy Merle Halsted to just plain Bill Halsted. After discharge from the Navy, he attended Frank Phillips College in Borger (Hutchinson County), Texas and West Texas State University in Canyon (Randall County), Texas. He worked for the First National Bank in Borger and for Commercial Credit Corporation in Amarillo (Potter and Randall Counties) Texas. In 1957 he met and married, on 30 May 1957, in Amarillo, Geraldine Erskine (Gerry), born 1 Sep 1937 in Dallas (Dallas County), Texas. Bill and Gerry lived in Albuquerque, NM in 1957 (my family and I visited them there once en route to Texas from California); Boys Ranch, (Oldham County), Texas as dorm parents in 1958; and his experience with Commercial Credit Corporation moved the family to Amarillo in 1959. The family moved from Amarillo to Colorado Springs, Colorado; to Dodge City, Kansas; (we also visited them in Dodge City, and I have some great home movies of our visit there.) to Aurora, Illinois; and back to Amarillo, Texas. Bill then joined Royal Crown Cola Corporation (R.C. Cola) in 1967 and relocated to Dallas, Texas. The family moved to San Antonio, Texas in December 1969 (The Air Force assigned me and my family to Brooks AFB, San Antonio, Tx. also in December 1969 and we had a good year there with Bill and his family.) As Bill was promoted within the corporation, the family was relocated again to Columbus, Georgia in 1973. They returned to San Antonio, Texas in 1974 and Bill retired from R.C. in 1977. From 1977 through 1990, Bill worked as an independent consultant for the soft drink industry. He is retired and for a while resided in Tampa, Florida with his eldest daughter, Tammy Jo. Tammy Jo later moved Bill back to the Veterans Home in Kerrville, Texas. Bill and his wife, Gerry, have four daughters: Tammy Jo; Judy Charlene; Genevieve (Genny) LeeAnn; and Jana Rene®. Bill and Gerry divorced in 1978 and she relocated to Amarillo, Texas where she met and married Michael Edmund Schetter, born 20 Nov. 1948 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on 27 November 1982. They reside in Bradenton, Florida where they own an irrigation - sprinkler business. Their address is 1308 67th Street, Court E., Bradenton, Florida 34208. Tel: (941) 746-7077 or 2399. Bill was discharged from the Veterans Home in Kerrville, Texas in the fall of 1998 and the last I knew (December 1998) was living in an assisted care facility in Comfort, Texas.
