- Birthday Peal
Mrs. H. Grimshaw, of Church Street, Barrowford, on Wednesday celebrated her 78th birthday, and at St. Thomas' Church the bells rang at 11 a.m. in her honour. Mrs. Grimshaw was born at Malham, Yorkshire, and came to live in Barrowford as a girl. At the age of sixteen years she joined the St. John Ambulance Brigade, and studied first-aid and home nursing, later passing her qualifying examinations. For several years in succession she was a member of a squad of seven, and entered divisional contests in Blackpool, Barnoldswick, Bolton, Warrington and Manchester. Gaining four firsts prizes and one second, respectively, Mrs. Grimshaw is the proud possessor of four gold and one silver medal. She; is also a member of the Mothers' Union. She has been a widow for over 39 years. She has four sons, all married, one son and his family living in America. Mrs. Grimshaw is one of a family of eleven: eight sisters' and three brothers. A sister, Mrs. Farraday Starkie, is 85 years of age, and resides with her husband in Nelson; he is 84. Her father, late Mr. Elisha Halstead, was a former sexton at St, Thomas' Church.
