- In 1775 Charles Tillinghas was appointed recruiting or enli sting officer by the General Assembly of Rhode Island (se e RI Colonial Records, vol. VII, p. 359) and was very activ e in the work, so much so that the Tories informed him if h e did not stop his active work in that direction they woul d kill him.
At Quitnesset Neck, RI (North Kingstown), in November of th e year the Revolutionary war broke out (1775), he sent hi s son John on horseback to mill, and while on the way, th e latter was seized by the Tories and made a prisoner, dyin g from rough treatment. In the same month four masked Tori es entered his house at night. They held a pistol to his w ife's head while she had a six-months'-old child in her arm s. They took him out of bed, drove him naked to the beach , put him into a boat, and carried him prisoner to Block Is land, where he died (from wounds?) seventeen days afterward.
