    • SIX DAYS' BICYCLE RACE. BURNLEY MAN'S FEAT OF ENDURANCE Burnley people will be interested to learn that Mr. Alfred Halstead, the son of Burnley people, took part last week in a remarkable test of endurance the other side of the Atlantic. At the Madison Square Gardens, New York, a six days' bicycle race was conducted, and telegrams on Saturday gave the Drobach Halstead team as being the fourth home, the leading teams having covered during the race the distance of 2,751 miles on the track. This beats the record of 1903 by 13 miles .and nine laps.
Mr. Halstead is exceedingly well known in Burnley and district, and although only 28 years of age, has travelled a great deal. He is the second son of Mrs. Halstead and the late Mr Smith Halstead, who resided in the Accrington Road district before leaving the country, but were better known in the Burnley Lane district, through living in Spencer Street. He is the grandson of the late Mr. James Bracewell, who was a blacksmith in Briercliffe-road. He was born at Sacramento, San Francisco, and in 1900 he was racing in South Africa; where he won races in Natal and Pretoria, whilst for some time he held a road record. On four previous occasions has been in six days' races at New York, and on each occasion he has always stood the test, and completed the trial. More recently he competed a six days' race at Dresden, and he and Drobach were returned third.
Mr. Halstead married Miss Lizzie Greenwood, of Coal Clough-lane, Burnley, about two years ago, and for about twelve months he was the licensee of the Britannia Inn, Guy Street, Padiham. He then returned to America, where he and Drobach are now in a cycle and motor business in New Jersey.
The conditions under which the race is run are a severe strain upon the cyclist, and one must be in the perfection of training before he undertakes the task. During the whole of the six days he has no regular sleep, but has to be content with snatches whilst his partner is riding, should his partner show signs wearying, the other member must.be ready to take his place on the track. Whilst one snatch of sleep might be fairly lengthy, another may not last more than a few minutes, and in order that the participant might have as much rest as possible, he is given drugs, but should his presence on the track be required urgently, an antidote has to be resorted to in order that he might be awake and be fit. The effect upon the rider is most astonishing. ,On a recent occasion, when Halstead took, part in six days' race he was unable to use his hands for many weeks owing to having gripped his bars for such a lengthy period, and it is some time before the rider regains his regular sleeping hours.
