    • FORMER BURNLEY WOMAN'S DEATH
A great friend of Mr. Tom Shaw, the Colne-born Socialist leader, textile expert, and a former M.P. for Preston, Mrs. Annie Elizabeth Fryer, died at her home, Drummond Avenue, Blackpool, on Wednesday afternoon.
A member of a well-known farming family in the Clitheroe district, Mrs. Fryer was the widow of the late Mr. James Fryer, a partner in a Foulridge manufacturing firm and a former licensee of the White Horse Hotel, Burnley, who died at Burnley eight years ago.
A political argument many years ago between Mr. Tom Shaw and the late Mr. Fryer, who held different political views, led to a lifelong friendship, and the two men subsequently travelled all over Europe together.
On Mr. Fryer's death, his son, Arthur, took over the hotel at Burnley, which he still carries on. A daughter, Lily, is the licensee of the Lane Ends Hotel, Lowerhouse. Mr. Thomas Fryer, another son, has retired to Carleton, near Blackpool.
Mrs. Fryer was well known for her charitable work in Blackpool and as a member of several local social clubs. A few days before her death she was the first-prize winner at a whist drive organised by one of these clubs. She was also a great church worker, and had been connected with Foulridge Church since it was first built.
