From The Golden Years, "In July, 1888 I came along, the first grandchild in the Halsted (sic) family. Grandpa and Grandma Halsted (sic) lived about a mile from us. My grandma Halsted was one of the kindest most gentle and patient women I ever knew. She helped make my childhood very happy. My grandpa Halsted was just the opposite, stern and very demanding, altho he loved us and was very good to us. They had a farm with lots of woods on it. In those woods grew haw trees, chestnut trees, persimmon trees, chinquipin trees, sweet gum trees, mulberry trees and many other trees we seldom see any more. My grand ma would take me to the fields and woods to get herbs and roots to make tea as medicine for different sickness we would have. Sassafras root tea for cleansing of the blood in the spring; butterfly root tea for fever; black haw root tea for female ailments. Slippery elm bark poultices for boils and carbuncles and so on and on. Mostly these remedies were handed down from the Indians. My grandma was born in 1836 and could remember when as a small child hearing wolves howling around her home at night."
This excerpt gives an insight of Adeline and affords a glimpse of life in that era. I hope you found it interesting. Good night, Leroy (Roy) M. Strickland, Jr.
