- Letter to brother Oswin, dated Nov 10, 1882, Fargo, North Dakota. "Dear Brother, Sister & All the young folks. We are all of us old folks. Well at this writing I received a letter from you dated Oct 6, I got it the 8th. Was glad to hear from you & your prospects for the winter, wish I had some Buckwheat flour to buy it & see if it would tast [sic] good with a sop in greese from my pig I butchered him the other day, he was six months old the day I butchered & he tiped the scales at 300 lbs neat dressed & it is good to eat. Who can beat that. I fed him on corn meal and water. I milk one cow now shall have two more to milk before long, one in this month & one in Dec. & I shall sell the milk I get $1.00 for 10 qts.all cash. But I have to buy hay $8- per ton now & it will be higher. Hay was very light, not over 1/2 ton to the acre & short & not worth cutting it. Will be & is scarce. I will have a load tomorrow 1 1/2 tons for $12. I must buy 6 tons & lots of feed Bran & shorts Bran is 60 cts per hunderd [sic], shorts 75 to 80, corn 50 per hunderd straw is not good it got wet just when it was thrashed a big rain for one day with a heavy wind went through the straw & that was all the rain this summer. My potatoes was never wet to the potatoes after I planted them & there is no rain yet. I put 100 bushels in the celler they are middling size & there was better potatoes to eat, thye [sic] are like floor when cooked. I don't sell any shall keep them for seed. They are Sunlet Star and Charles Downing...." "But wheat Wheat is all rage. No. 1 hard it costs only 35 to 40 cts. to raise it on the big farms & some say 25 cts per bushel on the bonanza farms that is on the 10 or 15 section farms where it is all done in sections with a driver where they have to get down or get off the premises regular slaves from early till late for $2.50 per day Never saw a Hillyer that would make a good slave only for himself..." "Well I will close by saying I don't get any letter from Millissa sence they left for Mississippi. But she will write some time I guess. A.J.Tylers were well when I last heard. Write please soon. P.B. Hillyer" The copy I received was typed and I wonder if maybe the date was entered wrong as he speaks of "Millissa sence they left for Mississippi" - We know that David Demaree Halstead died West Ft. Dodge in 1887 and that Betsy Melissa moved with son David Wileder and family [including sister Jane Elizabeth] to Ocean Springs, MS. Thus i feel the date of this letter is more probably 1892 instead of 1882.
