- " A laborer, James appears on the Bovina Assessment Rolls in 1833, 1841, and 1845 with 96, 50, and 30 acres respectively, however by 1850 he owned no land. James was widowed before the 1855 New York Census, and by then many of his children were under the care of friends and relatives."
Note - relative to "Marcus" shown with this family,"Marcus Halstead was a son of Elias and Eliza (Vanderbyke?) Halstead, according to Hester. He seems to fit better with that family, as he was born a little early for James. I think James was still living in his father's house in 1830 (per Census), which is backed by James having no Census entry of his own that year, and not being taxed for land until several years later. Talk to you soon, Gary! Mark [Halstead]"
