    • "There is still nothing certain about the parents of Everet Willemsz...his father's name no doubt was Willem and son of Cornelis, since it is appended to his name Williem Cornelis lived at least until 1607-08 at Woerden and must have died shortly thereafter...probably a craftsman...mother must have remarried...a Jan or Huybert (Huybrecht)...probable that her name was Niesgen (Agnes) Pietersdr (Petersdaughter)...both Evert's mother and stepfather...had died in the plague years of 1617-18. Evert...born in 1607/08 (he is said to be "about 15 years old" in January 1623) and living at the Woerden Orphanage, was a tailor' apprentice until September 1622 when he was allowed to attend the Latin School at Woerden under Master Lucas Zas. On June 13, 1622 it is recorded that he was stricken by a serious illness which deprived him for some time from the use of his powers of speech and hearing and intermittently of his sight. After miraculously regaining his speech on September 17, 1622 during the singing of Psalms, he resolved to become a minister if he should fully recover.

On June 24, 1632 he preached a sermon on the words of Paul, Galatians 5:16, "Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh", and was promptly ordained to the Holy Ministry. On June 17, 1632 it is recorded that he was to be sent to New Netherland and on July 15, 1632 he was appointed and signed his name to the agreement as "Everardus Boghaerdus" [Latinized version of Everet Bogart] as was the custom of the time..."

    • "...A man of complicated character, Domine Bogardus experienced many difficulties...with his relationship with the two Director-Generals, Wouter Van Twiller and William Kieft...following numerous denunciations by both Director Kieft and Domine Bogardus against each other...on August 17, 1647 both he and...Kieft sailed for Amsterdam aboard the ship "de Princess Amalia"...It is now known that the ill-fated ship ran aground in shallow water near Swansea, Wales at midnight between September 27 and 28th but did not immediately break apart. As the tide receded, the crew attempted to save the ship, but in failing to do so, the high tide of late September 28 and early 29th caused the ship to be flooded and raised from the shallow bar and then smashed down three times breaking in to pieces. Thus the date of the drowning of Domine Bogardus and Governor Kieft has been precisely determined to have occurred early on September 29, 1647. Of the 107 passengers aboard...only 21 are believe to have survived." [source - "Dear Cousins" William Bogardus, pp24-29 Prof. Willem Th.M.
