      E-mail to John Preston from Gary Halstead 19 Nov 1999 - "John: I am still working on my family tree - I had the parents of Hannah Williams-Halsted listed as Michael and Ann [Valentine] Williams. I do not remember where I had picked up the "Valentine" surname, although I do note in "An Outline Guide To The Descendants of Jonas Halstead of New York", 1985, Compiled by Claude Halstead and Hester Halstead Pier that this was the surname given. However, I note not only in your 'Individual Fact Sheet' but also in a new 1999 four page "First thru Fifth Generations" update and correction from Hester that the surname has changed to "Pankhurst". Can you give me the source you have recorded on this. I find myself becoming more-and-more a stickler on sources as I look back on earlier data and ask my poor memory [Where did I get this?], realizing that at the time I stumbled onto the data I felt it was coming from a reliable source; but twenty years later, unable to recall it so that I can judge reliability of contradictory information. I'm sure that in the forty plus years that you have been at this, you probably have encountered the same situation. I need to dig into my files and find the drawing I have with the boy sitting on the pot and the inscription "The job is not done until the paperwork is completed" and post this next to my computer, Ha! Ha! Anyway, slowly I am learning "Document, Document, and Document".
      Anyway John, I thank you for your help - - - and I'll try not to drive you nuts with too many questions. Cousin, Gary
      Michael Williams spouse's name provided by Hester Halstead Pier, 1999 & also by John Preston Halstead IV as "Ann Pankhurst" e-mail from John Preston Halstead IV 20 Nov 1999 "Ref. your ltr. of 11/19 6:04 PM: In an article in the NYG&BRecord, v.120 (1989) pp.211-13, John Hunt explores the family of Timothy [2] Halstead's wife Hannah's mother, Ann (Pankhurst) Williams.";
      NYGBR v.119 [Apr 1988] no.2: Matthew Wood art "The Family of Moyles Williams, One Of The Original Proprietors of Hempstead, Long Island.", p.80:
      "The name "Moyles Williams" appears on a list of the original proprietors of Hempstead derived from the old "Mouse Eaten Book" of town records, which is now lost. The history of Moyles and his immediate family is exceedingly obscure, due to the fact he and his sons died in mid-life. There is only one other record from Long Island which refers to Moyles. In 1667 the heirs of "Michael Williams" quit-claimed their interest in the estate of Henry Pearsall, who had married their widowed mother Ann. Fortunately these notices can be enriched by reference back in New England. Moyles and Ann Williams of Hempstead are clearly identical to Michael and Ann [Pankhurst] Williamson of Ipswich, Massachusetts and Newport, Rhode Island. This fact has not been brought out in previous work on the subject." Date of event based on b. of dau. Hannah; Matthew Woods article states "By 1638 he [Michael Williamson] married Ann Pankhurst, born about 1619 probably in Sussex, a 'cousin' of Dennis Geere and family whom she accompanied to Boston in 1635."
      In that Michael [Moyles] and Ann Williams are spoken of as "of Ipswich" and were apparently married prior to their immigration to Newport in 1638 it is felt safe to assume them to have married at Ipswich, Now in Essex County, Massachusetts, USA..

  • Notes
    • E-mail from Gary Halstead 14 Mar 2001:
      I said, m. at Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts that would explain how
      Dorcas could be their daughter. I have nothing on a Dorcas in my database.

      I need to look into the existence of Dorcas Williams more closely.
