- Charles' father Meshack I. Couch died on his claim on Monday August 12th, 1889, while accompanied by one of his sons while walking close to a cornfield, he saw a large rattlesnake and attempted to kill it with his pocket knife, when it sprang towards him striking him on the back of his right hand inflicting a wound from which he died after suffering intense agony for eighteen hours.
