Fatal Injuries in Darkened Home
An inquest was conducted by the County Coroner (Mr. Stanley Turner) at the Coroner’s Court, Fleece Street, on Monday afternoon, relative to the death of Mrs. Ellen Halstead, aged 46 years, of 46 Daniel Fold, Spotland, who died at the Rochdale Infirmary on Friday following injuries received at her home two days previously.
Evidence of identity was given by the deceased’s sister, Mrs. Doris Isherwood, of 64 Church Street, Rochdale. They had lived together at 46 Daniel Fold and early on Wednesday morning witness, who slept down stairs, was awakened by a thud and found her sister lying face downwards at the bottom of the stairs.
She was unconscious and assistance having been obtained the deceased was conveyed to the Infirmary, where she died on Friday.
Replying to the Coroner, witness said they were preparing to move from the house the following day, so there was no carpet on the stairs, which were straight but steep.
A daughter of the previous witness, also named Doris Isherwood, stated that she heard her aunt leave the bedroom early on Wednesday morning followed by the sound of a thud. The house was in darkness at the time and witness could not explain why her aunt had not switched on the stairs light on leaving the bedroom. From the position in which deceased was lying at the bottom of the stairs it appeared that she had slipped on the stairs and fallen heavily.
P.C. Walker spoke to an examination of the stairs, which were of the average kind with handrail fixture, and P.C. Mosely deposed to the removal to the Infirmary.
The Coroner stated that according to the medical report the deceased sustained injuries to the head, including a fracture of the skull, and it was apparent that these injuries were caused as a result of the fall down stairs. A verdict of Accidental death” was accordingly entered.5
