Many friends in the distribution side of the newspaper world will learn with regret of the death of Mr. Harry Halstead, principal, of the firm of Messrs. Halstead and Sons, wholesale newsagents, of Nottingham, which occurrcd with tragic suddenness at his home.36. Elen-avenue, on Saturday morning.
Mr. Halstead, who was 69 years of age, had not been in robust health for some time, but he appeared to be fairly well on Friday and went to business for a short while. He retired to bed at his usual time, but when his son. Mr. Geoffrey Halstead, visited his bedroom on Saturday morning he found him dead.
A native of Blackburn, Lancashire. Mr. Halstead to Nottingham from London In 1918, when he acquired the old-established wholesale newsagency businesses founded by the late Mr. C. Gelsthorpe. Mr. Halstead had wide experience of wholesale newsagency business and he rapidly developed the Nottingham concern In which his three sons were associated with him.
Mr. Halstead was Identified with the Wholesale Newsagents’ Federation and was also a Freemason, being a member of the Stetchford Lodge, Birmingham.
Mrs. Halstead died some four years after the family came to Nottingham. Mr. Halstead Is survived by three sons and a daughter.12 His estate was probated on 4 March 1937 at Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. The estate was valued at £16,037 3s 4d.11

They decamped on seeing the officer, but were overtaken The defendants, who appeared, explained that they were only tossing for half an ounce of twist. There was no real gambling for money There being no record against the men they were allowed to escape with the payment of costs.5

(brother of the bride) presided the organ and played appropriate music. The bride who was prettily attired in cream cashmere, was accompanied by her mother, who gave her away. The bridesmaids were Miss Halstead (sister of the bride) and Miss Thorp (sister of the bridegroom), who were attired in dresses of blue .and pink floral voile. The bridegroom was attended his brother, Mr. Thos. W. Thorp, and Mr. Edwin Sunderland, Blackshawhead. After the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. R. H. B. Shapland, and a hymn sung by the congregation, the guests adjourned to Mr. H. King’s, Gandy Bridge, where tea was served, and the evening spent in a sociable manner. The happy couple received many handsome and useful presents, including one from Lumbutts C.E. Society and one from his class Lumbutts United Methoddist School, where Mr. Thorp is superintend- ent. Mr. and Mrs. Thorp left by the 7-14 train to Blackpool, where the honeymoon is being spent.2

There was a large congregation at the Wirksworlh Baptist Church on Wednesday morning on the occasion of the wedding of Mr Percy Hastead. elder son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Halstead, the Gas Works. Wirksworth, and Miss Mary T. Stirzaker, younger daughter of Mrs. Stirzaker and the late Mr. B. Stlrzaker. Hares Run House. Wirksworth. The Rev, I. A. Ward officiated, and the service was choral. Mr. R Hatchett playing appropriate priate wedding music.
The bride, who was given away by her cousin. Mr. E. H. Roose. Liverpool, wore a pale blue Venetian cloth costume with black tulle picture hat trimmed with ostrich plume.she also carried a shower bouquet composed of lilies of the valley, chrysanthemums, camelias. heather and smilax. Attendant on the bride were two bridesmaids, the Misses A Stirzaker (sister of the bride). and Hilda Halstead (sister of the bridegroom), and they were in brown Venetian cloth costumes and hats to tone, they also wore pretty gold brooches, gifts of the bridegroom Mr Wilfred Ogden, Stockport, acted as groomsman.
The bridegroom is well-known in the Chesterfield district where he holds the position of manager of gas works for the Sheepbridge Coal and Iron Co. Following the ceremony a reception was held at the bride's home, attended be a largre circle of well wishing friends. Later in the day Mr. and Mrs. Halstead left for their new home at Brimington.

FUNERAL OF WHITTINGTON GAS MANAGER AT WIRKSWORTH

On Thursday aftenoon the funeral of Mr. Halstead. of Brimington, manager of the Whittington Gas Company, took place in the Baptist Cemetery at Wirksworth. Deceased, who was 27 years old, died on Sunday at Brimington from pneumonia tollowing intluenza. His wife is seriously ill with influenza, and was unable to attend the funeral. Mr. Halstead was the elder son Mr. Stephen Halstead, manager of the Wirksworth Gas Company.7 His estate was given Letters of Administration on 3 January 1919 at London, England. Arthur died on 13 April 1918 at West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was a private in the Northumberland Fusiliers and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was awarded the Bristish War Medal and the Victory Medal.6

Pte. Frank T. Halstead, Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers, who is a prisoner of war at Gustrow, Germany, writing to his ten-year-old daughter on May 4th, says that all the boys who trained with him at Rugeley have "gone under" with the exception of twelve, and adds—“ I think you ought to be thankful I am alive. I had a very narrow escape, but it had not to be. It was awful, I can assure you, I hope you don’t bother about me being a prisoner, for I am safe, and if I have health I shall come back again. I am in fairly good health, and hope you are the same.’’ On Wednesday morning his mother received a postcard from him. dated May 23rd, so that it had been more than two months on the way. In it he says "l am quite well, and I hope you are same. Keep your pluck up. I shall be home as soon as the war is over."— Another brother. Pte. Arthur Halstead, N.F., has been officially reported missing as from April 13th, and nothing been heard of him since.7

We regret to have to record the deaths of two more Todmorden soldiers whilst on active iservice. The first is that of Private Arthur Halstead, Northumberland Fusiliers, who was previously reported missing, and now he has been presumed dead. Private Halstead, whose home was at 12. Laneside Street, Todmorden. joined up on June 14th, 1916. He was reported missing during April, 1918, and on the 14th this month (the third anniversary of his enlistment) his family was informed that he is presumed dead. Prior to enlistment he worked for the Bridge End Co-operative Society as manager of their Knowlwood branch, and was connected with Lumbutts church and Sunday school.7

Sydney Halstead (50), a ’bus driver of Mizpah Street, Burnley, was fined 20s. for driving an omnibus in Halifax Road, Rochdale, on May 8th, without reasonable consideration for others. A further summons for driving without due care and attention was dismissed. - Superintendent French mentioned that as a police car was travelling in the direction of Rochdale near the Smallbridge Congregational Church, the driver saw approaching a horse-drawn vehicle, a salooncar and an omnibus. The last-named vehicle was attempting to overtake the other two, which were level, so that the road was blocked by three lines of traffic.The police signalled the defendant to pull up, and in doing so the omnibus collided with the front of the saloon car. - Evidence in corroboration was given by P.C. Brookes of the Rochdale County Police. Ephrain Brown, the driver of the horse and cart, and George Alfred Frost of Syke Farm, the driver of the saloon car.—The defendant pleaded not guilty and on oath said he considered that he had left sufficient space for oncoming traffic to pass The width of the road was thirty-two feet. There would have been no accident if he had not received a signal to slow down. In addition to the fine mentioned, the defendant was ordered to pay 12s. 6d witness costs.8
