Richard FOX

Last Edited=7 Oct 2018
Richard FOX was born in 1827 at Dolphinholme, Lancashire, England.
Richard married Martha HARRISON, daughter of Joshua BOYES and Lydia HALSTEAD, on 27 January 1866 at St Peter, Birstall, Yorkshire, England. He was a Platelayer aged 39, a widower residing in Birkenshaw. His father was listed as John FOX, a Smith. Married in the Parish Church, according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church, by Banns. The marriage was witnessed by William SCAIFE and George BROMLEY.1,2
In the census of 2 April 1871 at Deans Fold, Gomersal, Yorkshire, England, Richard was listed as aged 45 born Dolphinholme, the Head of Household; a Railway Labourer, living with his wife Martha, sons John and Thomas, daughters Ann, Margaret and Mary E.3
Richard died on 27 October 1880 at between Drighlington and Birkenshaw, Yorkshire, England.4,5

Research Note: An inquest was held yesterday by Mr. J. G. Hutchinson, the Bradford borough coroner, on the body of Richard Fox. a platelayer, who was killed on the Great Northern Railway line between Drighlington and Birkenshaw stations on Wednesday evening. The evidence showed that a block had occurred near Drighlington in consequence of the storm on Wednesday, and that the line was used as a single line. The deceased, who had been engaged in placing fog signals on the line, had received no intimation of the alteration which had been made in the traffic, and was knocked down by an express train proceeding to Bradford whilst he was walking in the direction of Birkenshaw. The jury returned a verdict of “Accidental death,” but added that the railway company had contributed to the accident in that they had not made proper provision for the warning of platelayers and others on the occasion of a line of railway being used as a single line.5

George BENNETT of Thomas Lane, Wakefield, Forgeman says, I have known dec'd for the last 2 months during which time he has been working at Mr Samuel Whitham's Calder Vale Iron Works, Wakefield. He and I were employed at the plate rollers last Thursday night about 12 o'clock. He was working the reverse crab to put the power on and off. He had hold of the lever whilst a piece of iron was coming the last time thro' the rollers which had been tightened. As soon as the piece of iron got into the rollers it threw the crab off and the end of the lever hit dec'd on the belly and knocked him on to his back. He got up immediately and finished the piece of iron. About a minute and a half after he was hit he laid himself down with his belly across a wooden box and fainted. We gave him some water and he came round and then set off to his lodgings in Mark Street where I saw him in bed both on Friday and Saturday. Dec'd ought to have stood off the end of the lever and not on the side. The lever had not shewn any sign of failing before. There was good light.
Lydia, the wife of William CLARK of Mark Street, joiner says. Dec'd has lodged with us for 10 or 12 days. Last Thursday night about 6 o'clock he went out of our house to go to work. He appeared to be in good health and spirits. He was very steady. He came back about 1 o'clock on Friday morning. I let him in. He did not say that any thing was the matter. About 2 or 3 hours afterwards i heard him say to another man who slept in his room"George I'm sick". I got up and asked him if he was ill. He said he had got hurt with a crab and that he did not want a doctor.Dec'd continued to vomit amd I sent for Mr Kemp and his assistant Mr Craister came. Dec'd appeared to be in great pain last Friday. He died yesterday morning between 4 and 5 o'clock.
John LOCKWOOD of Jump near Hoyland, Blacksmith says: Dec'd married my sister. He was 38 years old and a labourer in a forge.
Verdict: Accidentally injured.6

An inquest was held, to-day, at Wombwell on the body of Fred Hoyland, 15, pony driver, of Milton Street, Wombwell, who was killed on Friday evening whilst working in the above colliery.
According to the evidence of Frank Keen, trammer, of Pit- Street. Low Valley, deceased left them about 9.15 with two full tubs of coal. He was taking them down a slight decline, and had a locker in each tub. which appears to have stopped them. He must have got in front for the purpose of slackening the lockers, and giving the tubs a fresh start by pulling them, when his clog got fast and held him whilst the tubs ran into him. He had been gone about 15 minutes when he was found with the bumper the first tub on his cheat, and life was extinct.
A verdict of "Accidental death'’ was returned.
The proceedings were watched on behalf of the Colliery Company by Mr. J. Halmshaw. manager, and the Yorkshire Miners’ Association was represented Mr. Allen Ogden.5
