Research Note: CRASH INTO RAIL BRIDGE.
HALIFAX MAN SERIOUSLY HURT
CAR DRIVER ESCAPES.
Two Halifax men returning from a dance at Golcar early yesterday morning, were involved in a motor smash, and one of them, Ronald Schofield (21), of Hudersfield Road, is now in the Huddersfield Infirmary suffering from concussion, a broken jaw, and other injuries. The driver, Norman Shaw (22), of Oakland, Greetland, escaped with a severe cut on tho left side of the head.
The accident occurred near a railway bridge which crosses the L.M.S. railway, near Botham Hall Road, in Scar Lane. It is said that the car had a puncture, which forced the steering wheel out of Shaw’s hands, and the car crashed into the parapet of the bridge, knocking the wall down, and sending some the stones on to the railway lines. Trains were delayed until they were removed. The men had a narrow escape from being flung on to the lines, which are 70 feet or so below the bridge.
The road turns sharply at the scene of the accident.3
Ronald died on 28 December 1928 at Golcar, Yorkshire.4,3
