James Halstead, a stonemason, aged thirty-eight, residing near to the Wesleyan Chapel, Wesley Place, had been accustomed to getting a good deal of drink, and was drunk on Sunday. On Monday he went to work as usual, but during the day complained of illness, and next day he remained at home. Between four and five o'clock in the afternoon he left home for the purpose of going into the town. He had not gone far, however, when he was seen to fall. Assistance was immediately at hand, and he was removed in a dying state to a cottage close by, and Dr. Stewart was sent for, but before he arrived Halstead was dead. He leaves a family of small childen.8

On Thursday (yesterday), 12 o'clock,a purse containing £1 15s. was stolen, together with gold ring and silver brooch, from the shop of Mr. Holstead, confectioner, Carlisle, by girl named Betsy Frost, aged 15 years, who afterwards went into shop in Rickergate, for a penny tart, when the shopkeeper (a friend of Mrs. Holstead’s) recognized the ring on her finger, and took it away sending it to Mrs. Holstead for identification, during which time the prisoner ran away. About 4 p.m., Supt. Fowler was passing Eden Bridges in his cart, when information of the robbery was given to him. He made inquiries, and having ascertained the route taken by her, he then drove in pursuit, the result of which was the prisoner’s apprehension, the other side of Kingstown. The purse and part the money were found her possession. She was taken into custody, and subsequently handed over to the City authorities.3
