A Strange Circumstance
Saturday's issue of the Herald contained an account of the exhumation of a body in Hapton Cemetery, when Mrs. Halstead, clogger, of Oxford-road, and others identified it as her son, John Halstead, who recently disappeared from his home in Burnley, and was not seen alive since. It will be remembered that the body was found in the canal near Hapton, and as there was no evidence of identification an open verdict was returned by a coroner's jury, and the body was buried in Hapton Cemetery. The body was accordingly exhumed on Wednesday last and identified beyond all doubt as that John Halstead, a peculiar mark on the thigh known to his brother being pointed out. Yesterday morning the following letter waa received by Mr. Webster, pawnbroker, of the Cattle Market, Burnley;- "Widnes, September 10. 1883.- Sir, -Will you be so kind as to send the article described on this ticket by parcels post to the following address; John Halstead, care of Joseph Mills, No. 2. Oxford-street, Widnes, and I will pay the postage at Widnes.-Yours, J. Halstead." The article referred to is a shirt which Mr. Webster says was pawned by the John Halstead, who was reported dead, and who, he says, was in the habit of pawning with him. Mrs. Halstead, of Oxford-road, was communicated with, and the letter was shown her, but she stated that it was not the handwriting of her son, John Halstead. She, however, dispatched a telegram to gain some information on the subject. No particular importance is attached to the letter, because it is supposed that the ticket referring to the shirt was either given or sold bv John Halstead, and that the person into whose possession it went, on sending for it, signed the name John Halstead, the pawnee, so that Mr. Webster, the pawnbroker, might not be misled in any way.⁷

Among the many fine characters whom the war has claimed as its victims is Pte; Harry Halstead, of the 118th Labour Company, whose home was at 128, Basnett Street, Burnley. The deceased, who was 42 years of age, was extremely well known in various departments of the town's life, having been in; the employ of the Burnley Corporation for 21 years, and for a great portion of that period had-been Inspector under the Highways Department, a post for which his all-round qualifications eminently fitted him. It was on account of the confidence which his work inspired in his superiors that he was appointed to the post, and throughout his long term of service with the Corporation he earned the. esteem.of this Committee. In the musical life of Burnley he was also very well known, having been a member the the Sion Baptist Church Choir, Yorkshire Street. A tenor of very acceptable quality, he was a member of the Lyric Glee Party, the other members of which were Mr. Kippax, Mr. A Smith, and Charles Smith, and with this combination he has sung at concerts over a wide area. He joined the Army voluntarily two years last September, and after a period at Whitchurch and Prees Heath, he was drafted out to France twelve months ago. For a potion of the time he had done Military Police duty, but in the main he had been occupied on railway work, for which, by the nature of his own occupation, he was well fitted. Promotion would undoubtably have been his, but on the 28th ult. he received a shell wound in the head, and died the same day. He leaves a widow and three children.

MR. FRANK HALSTEAD, formerly head of the firm of Halstead and Co., surgical dressing manufacturers. Burnley, died in hospital on March 30th this year. On Wednesday his 74-years-old father. Mr. R. H. Halstead, 97, Reynolds-street, Burnley, was sued by his son's executors for £15O, part of a sum of £350 which, it was alleged by the executors, Mr. R. H. Halstead had drawn from the firm's account.
Mr. J. Davidson (instructed by Messrs. H. Ogden and Co.) appeared on behalf of Mr. R. H Halstead.
One of the executors, Gilbert Benson, a retired police constable. said he had been present at Preston Infirmary on one occasion, on or about March 11th, when Mr. Halstead. senior, had asked his son to sign about three blank cheques in order to pay some business accounts. There was said defendant an agreement to recompense him (defendant) for his services and for the use of his home, with a sum of £350. In February a cheque for that sum had been fully made out with the exception of the date, and signed by the son.
Mr. Halstead sen. denied having asked his son sign any blank cheques at Preston Infirmary. His case was that when his son first started in business in 1938 he (Mr. R. H. Halstead had offered the use of rooms without rent at 97. Reynolds-street, where he was tenant, and also offered his services without full remuneration to the firm, until, as was agreed by the son, such time as the business was doing well. There was, said defendant, an agreement by the son.
ACTION HONEST
Judge A. Walmsley said he was well able to understand how the executors had become suspicious, and had sought an explanation and he was therefore bound to say that the action, in view of defendants previous unwillingness to explain satisfactorily, had very properly been brought to Court.
But defendant's action seemed an honest one. He had undergone a searching cross-examination, without varying or prevaricating, and his evidence had seemed substantially true. Judgment. therefore, would be given for defendant, but since his previous explanations had been unsatisfactory then it was, the judge felt, only proper that he should pay costs.¹¹

Obituary of Bernard HALSTED: on 15 October 1889 at Lancashire, England, Funeral of a Volunteer—Yesterday afternoon, the remains of Mr. Bernard Halstead, of Albert-street, Burnley, were interred in the Burnley Cemeterv. Deceased had been the local Volunteer corps for 25 years, and was sergeant when he retired. The funeral cortige started from Albert-street, headed by about 22 sergeants of the headquarters companies of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment. Proceding, were several members of the Conservative Sick and Burial Society, deceased having been a member and also steward st the Central Conservative Club. Large numbers of spectators witnessed the procession en route to the Cemetery. The coffin was covered with beautiful wreaths, including one sent by the sergeants. The hymn, ** Days and moments quickly flying,” was very pathetically rendered at the graveside. Deceased, who in his 60th year, leaves a widow and two children.⁷

The death took place last Sunday of Mr. John Halstead (81), of 11, Albert Street. Mr Halstead, who was connected with St. Peter's Church all his life, was clothlooker at Browhead Mill from its commencement to his retirement in 1929. In his early days he played with Burnley Belvedere Football Club, and was also a keen poultry and pigeon fancier. The funeral took place on Wednesday, and the Rev. G. C Roodhouse officiated at at the services. Arrangements: Mr. T. Gledhill, Brunshaw-road.•.¹³ His estate was given Letters of Administration on 31 January 1947 at Lancaster, Lancashire, England.
