James married Mary Ann PITT on 22 July 1839 at St Mary, Islington, Middlesex. He was a Plumber of full age, a bachelor residing at 21 White Lion Street. His father was listed as James HALSTEAD, a Cabinter Maker. After Banns. The marriage was witnessed by William PITT and Mary Ann HALSTEAD.1,2

His wife, Martha, died in 1910 in the Bradford registration district.10
In the census of 2 April 1911 at 1081 Leeds Road, Bradford, Yorkshire, John was listed as a widower, aged 60 born Bradford, the Head of Household; an Insurance Agent, living with his sons William Milner, Walter Halstead and James Alfred, daughter Hilda Winifred.11

In the census of 6 June 1841 at Prospect Street, Bingley, Yorkshire, he was listed as a Woolcomber, aged 45 born in county, the son of Grace HALSTEAD.1 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Prospect Street, Bingley, Yorkshire, he was listed as single, a Woolcomber, aged 54 born Bingley, the brother of William HALSTEAD.2
