     William was also known as William HARTLEY.

Research Note: Whilst he was known as William HALSTEAD, and appears that way on the census returns and his death, he was born the illegitimate son of Nancy HARTLEY in 1838 and took the name of HALSTEAD when his mother married.
The New GRO indexes released in November 2016 also show that Wlliam was in fact a HARTLEY by birth.
William HARTLEY was born on 3 August 1838 at Town House, Marsden, Lancashire.1 He was the son of Nancy HARTLEY. In the census of 6 June 1841 at Southfield, Great Marsden, Lancashire, he was listed as aged 2 born in county, the assumed grandson of William HARTLEY.2 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Southfield, Great Marsden, Lancashire, he was listed as aged 12 born Marsden, the grandson of William HARTLEY.3 In the census of 7 April 1861 at Knave Hill, Great Marsden, Lancashire, he was listed as single, a Quarryman, aged 22 born Great Marsden, the son of Harry HALSTEAD.4
William married Sarah HORSFALL on 22 February 1866 at St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire. He was a Stone Mason aged 27, a bachelor residing in Little Marsden. His father was listed as Harry HALSTEAD, a Farmer. by Superintendent Registrar Certificate. The marriage was witnessed by J W FISHER and John HORSFIELD.5
In the census of 2 April 1871 at Crowther Street, Little Marsden, Lancashire, William was listed as aged 32 born Marsden, the Head of Household; a Stone Cutter, living with his wife Sarah.6
His wife, Sarah, died on 29 June 1875 at Lee, Marsden, Lancashire; Sex - Female / Aged - 35 Year / Occupation - wife of William HARTLEY, a Farmer / Cause of death - 1 day Coma - certified by Alex P MILLER M D / Informant - W HARTLEY, widower of deceased, present at death, Lee, Marsden / Registered - 30 June 1875.7,8
William married Martha CLARKE on 17 January 1878 at St Thomas, Barrowford, Lancashire. He was a Mason aged 39, a widower residing in Nelson. His father was listed as Harry HALSTEAD (deceased), a Farmer. By Licence. The marriage was witnessed by Henry BALDWIN and Ann STARKIE.9,10
In the census of 3 April 1881 at Higher Ford, Barrowford Booth, Lancashire, William was listed as aged 42 born Great Marsden, the Head of Household; a Brewer and Innkeeper, living with his wife Martha, daughter Elizabeth.11
In the census of 5 April 1891 at Bridge Inn, 146 Gisburn Road, Barrowford, Lancashire, William was listed as aged 52 born Marsden, the Head of Household; a Beer Retailer, living with his wife Martha.12
In the census of 31 March 1901 at Bridge Inn, 146 Gisburn Road, Barrowford, Lancashire, William was listed as aged 62 born Great Marsden, the Head of Household; a Beer Retailer, living with his wife Martha.13
William died on 30 April 1902 at Old Bridge Inn, Barrowford, Lancashire, at the age of 63.14,15 His estate was probated on 31 May 1902 at London. The estate was valued at £173 9s 0d.15

Harriet married Joseph HALSTEAD, son of John HALSTEAD and Martha KIPPAX, on 15 January 1822 at St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire. She was of this Township. Married by Banns. The marriage was witnessed by John DYSON and Henry AYRTON.1
Harriet died on 19 September 1880 at Port Burwell. Her estate was probated on 23 December 1880 at Principal Probate Registry, London. The estate was valued at under £200.2

Henry married Hannah GREENWOOD on 24 December 1859 at the Register Office, Halifax, Yorkshire. He was an Excavator aged 54, a widower residing in Haugh, Northowram. His father was listed as James HALSTEAD (deceased), a Farmer. Married in the Register Office. The marriage was witnessed by Samuel HALL and William H OVERALL.1,2
