Halstead ELLIOTT

#13330, b. 1871, d. 1934
Last Edited=28 Oct 2016
Research Note: The 1911 census says that they have been married for 18 years but that ties in with Henrietta's marriage to a William Thomas BALL. The only marriage for Halstead ELLIOT to a Henrietta is to Henrietta BALL in 1929

No record in the census returns can be found for Halstead ELLIOTT prior to 1901.
Halstead ELLIOTT was born in 1871 at Stratford, Essex.1 He was the son of Samuel ELLIOTT and Eliza LOW.
In the census of 31 March 1901 at 26 Cullum Street, West Ham, Essex, Halstead was listed as aged 29 born Stratford, the Head of Household; a Fireman on Steamship, living with his wife Henrietta, son Thomas, daughter Katie A.2
In the census of 2 April 1911 at 20 Broad Street, Stratford, Essex, Halstead was listed as aged 39 born Stratford, the Head of Household; a Dock Labourer, living with his wife Henrietta, daughters Kate, Amy, Henrietta and Sarah, sons Thomas, Earnest and Frank (married 18 years - 7 children - 7 living.)3

Research Note: RIOTING IN LONDON DOCKS
THE EARLY DISTURBANCE FIERCE FIGHT.
The rioting which occurred shortly before seven o'clock on Wednesday, lasting for about an hour, was, it appears, the outcome of a preconceived plan by the strikers to rush to Victoria Dock from the entrance of Custom House Station. To obtain access to the dock at this point it is neceasary to mount a flight of steps at the station, cross a footbridge over the railway line and pass through a narrow gate. Between 2.000 and 3,000 strikers - another estimate puts the number at nearly 4,000 - packed the roadway outside the station and after the blacklegs had gone into work large numbers of trades unionists began to cross the bridge and enter the dock. Although the police, who numbered onlv seven at that spot, had their suspicions as to the strikers' intentions, they were unable to prevent them from going over the bridge, for it might have been the strikers desire to be taken on inside the dock. Therefore, the police had not sufficient justification for acting at that moment. Eventually 700 or 800 men managed to get inside Victoria Dock, and then the trouble began. As soon as the free labourers saw the hostile intention of their opponents they ceased work in order to defend themselves. Very quickly they were involved in a serious fight. Some of the blacklegs were armed with revolvers, and made use of these weapons, It is stated that three of the men who were shot were strikers, and that once striker who had a revolver woundud a blackleg. It was impossible for the police outside the Custom House to cross the bridge and go the assistance of the blacklegs, with a view to dispersing the combatants, for they had a huge mob to control. Consequently the fierce fight raged inside the dock for half an hour unchecked. Volleys of stones were slung, and missiles of every description were also used. Shots were fired, and belts, hooks, and even hammers were brought into play. Many of the combatants sustained injuries, and large numbers limped awav from the scene of the struggle bleeding from slight wounds about the head. Others were temporarily put out of action by kicks in various parts of the body. The twelve men who sought treatment at the Seamen's Hospital represented only a proportion of those who sustained injuries in one form or another. One of the men who were shot was removed in a cab, but all the others were able to walk. Halstead Elliott, who had a bullet the wall of the stomach, refused treatment and left. Another man was shot in the throat, and the bullet was not extracted. A third was hit with a bullet in the side, and in his case, also, the shot was allowed to remain. After the fight the dockk was over, the strikers, who had not been hurt, flocked back over the bridge and, it is stated incited their comrades outside the station, numbering about 2,000 or 3,000 to follow them and make short work of the blackleg's, who they said numbered onlv 50. Thus encouraged, many of the strikers moved forward, and in inspector and 6 constsbles suddenly found themselves wedged against the wall, and powerless to prevent the solid mass of humanity proceeding up the stairs across the bridge. The officers drew their truncheons and struck out, but their position was a serious one, the strike's retaliating hurling three or four of them into the roadway. Appeals for help brought 30 constables, who were not far away tothe scene, and with drawn baton they charged the mob.4
Halstead married Henrietta BALL on 27 November 1929 at the Register Office, Hackney, Middlesex. He was a Labourer aged 58, a bachelor residing at 2 Percy Terrace, Hackney Wick. His father was listed as Samuel ELLIOTT (deceased), a Bolt Maker. Married by Certificate. The marriage was witnessed by C FULTON and M ABBOTT.5,6
Halstead's death was registered in 1934 in the West Ham registration district.7

His father was listed as Halstead BERRY (deceased), a Marine Broker. By Licence. The marriage was witnessed by Benjamin ASHWORTH and Martha Ann DEWHURST.4,5 He was listed in the 1939Register taken on 29 September 1939 at 26 Allen Street, Burnley, Lancashire. He was a Blacksmiths Striker, born 6 July 1898. There was one other redacted person in the household.6
Halstead's death was registered in 1948 in the Burnley registration district.7

Research Note: On his marriage Halstead says that his father is also Halstead BERRY. However, the only Halstead BERRY's died too long before he was born.

His mother Ellen was married to John BERRY who died 5 years before he was born the clues as to his true father are I believe in his middle name from his birth (which he didn't use on his marriage) of ASHWORTH and the fact that he is listed on the 1911 census as the son of William ASHWORTH, a Marine Broker. John BERRY had been a Blacksmith's Striker.
