Appears in a newspaper article on on 15 April 1955 at at Nelson, Lancashire, England, WELL DONE
A TOTAL of 371 years service to the firm was represented by the nine operatives presented to the Queen at Malvern Mill. Selected because of their long service— most of them have been with the firm for over 40 years —they represented all sections of the mill.
Mr. Arthur Langfleld, 182 Barkerhouse Road, Nelson, the firm’s 77 - year - old engineer, needs no Introduction to readers. His story was told in 1953 after he had been awarded the British Empire Medal which. he subsequently received from Lord Derby at Knowsley Hall. But yesterday was the first time Arthur had seen the Queen who conferred the honour upon him.
For 44 years Arthur’s working life has been devoted to the Malvern Mill engine. He started it up when the firm opened in 1913 and he has run it ever since. And during the whole of that time the engine has stopped only once during working hours—it was out ot action for seven hours because of a breakdown.
Until he reached the age of 70, too, Arthur had never had a day oft work through illness. His son, Walter (aged 47), lias worked ot Pollard's since leaving school and now assists his fattier in the enginehouse.
Most excited little girl in the throng of schoolchildren in the town centre? It could have been eight-vear-old Valerie Halstead, 57 Castle Street, Nelson. For a tew minutes after little Valerie saw the Queen pass by. Her Majestv was shaking the hand of Valeric’s father 52- year-old Mr. Gordon Halstead.
Mr. Halstead (40 years’ service) began as a half-timer in the warehouse at the age 12, and is now longest serving tapesizer. Son Ivan, aged 16, works at the same firm as a weaver.
Mr Halstead’s comment: “It was something new for me, but a great honour.”.6
Gordon died on 30 September 1969 at 57 Castle Street, Nelson, Lancashire, at the age of 66.7,8 His estate was given Letters of Administration on 19 August 1971 at Manchester, Lancashire, England. The estate was valued at £1,235.8
