A MINE ON FIRE.
LOSS OF OVER 100 LIVES.
The Press Association Dewsbury correspondent telegraphed on Tuesday : — The colliery explosion which occurred near the town of Dewsbury, sad to say, has involved the loss of more than 100 lives. It took place at the Combs Colliery, belonging to Mr. Edward Ingham, about noon, but there being no telegraph office in the village of Thornhill, where the colliery is situated, the news was some time before it became known in Dewsbury. Great excitement was caused. Conveyances of every description were run to the place, and it was found that the explosion had taken effect through the winding-up shaft, and at a time when most of the men and boys were at work. Crowds of sorrowing people came, and many distressing scenes were witnessed. In a few hours the bodies of four poor fellows were recovered and brought to the bank. They proved to be those of R. B. Garthwaite, Walter Field, Samuel Croft.single men ; and James Scargil. The latter was 46 years of age, and was married. No effort was spared to get at other men in the pit, but nothing practical could be done as the ventilation could not be restored, and the work- ings were filled with deadly gasses. Altogether there were 66 miners entombed and 45 boys. Up to eight o'clock no further bodies had been recovered.

At 9-30 the search party had to abandon opera- tions. The body of Amos Hawksworth, under- ground manager, had been recovered, but will not he brought to the bank until morning. The search party have seen three bodies in the Wheatley seam, and state that they are fearfully burned.
The Press Association's special correspondent at Dewsbury telegraphed on Wednesday night as follows : — The first two men to be brought up this afternoon from Combs Colliery, the scene of yesterday's explosion, were found to be alive. They were brought to the bank at 5-15, and intense excitement was quickly manifested in the district when it became known that all hope was not in vain. When the distressed relatives of the entombed men found that those whom they had quite given up as lost might yet possibly be restored to them the scene was indeed an extraordinary one. From day- break large crowds have occupied the slopes adjacent to the colliery, and here throughout the entire day they patiently waited watching eagerly the operations of the mine officials and their willing helpers, and joy at the totally unexpected result of explorations knew no bounds. So fierce was the fire following the explosion that it was impossible for the Assistant Government Inspector, Mr. Mellor, or Mr. Nevin, who led the exploring party, to enter the main shaft. At the earliest possible moment, however, Henry Crossley, the under- manager of the Ings mine, belonging to the same owner, heroically descended, accompanied by Albert Lodge, night deputy at Combs Pit, and brought to bank the bodies of James Scargill, blacksmith, of Thornhill, married ; Roland Garthwaite, hurrier, single, aged 26 ; Samuel Croft, 26, hanger-on ; and Walter Field, 16, pony driver. It being then impossible to reach the remainder of ttie imprisoned men, the pit's mouth was closed and the mine was partially flooded. Crossley, in describing how the bodies were found, says : — All the men were lying in peaceful attitudes, as though suddenly overcome by after-damp. The blacksmith was lying face downwards with his arms beneath his chin apparently for the purpose of avoiding as far as possible the foul air, and getting advantage of any fresh air to be found in the lower level. Ten or 15 yards away lay Field on his side, while Croft and the other man were upon their backs with arms extended. These bodies were not burned at all. When flooding operations were dis- continued this morning four relief parties were organised to continue the work of exploration. The first party in charge of Mr. Scott and consisting of Messrs. Beecher, Child, Lodge, J. A. Senior, and E. Wrathmell went down at noon, their prepara- tions having, in the meantime, been watched by ever increasing and anxious crowds, composed of persons anxious to hear tidings of relatives and friends. Wednesday being a half-holiday, a large number of persons flocked to the scene from Hud- dersfield, Leeds, and Wakefield, travelling in all kinds of vehicles. When the first signal was given by the explorers, at 2-45, there were probably 6,000 people in the vicinity of the pit, but most reverent silence was preserved, and the entire scene was most pathetic. Shortly after the signal was given, two begrimed men ascended in the cage, and, proceeding to the office at which Mr. Ingham, the owner of the colliery, had just arrived from Ireland, reported that Mr. Scott, the leader of the gallant little band of rescuers, had reached a most difficult junction of the workings. No fire had been encountered on the route, and the air was by that time remarkably clear. They had passed 85 dead bodies, and intended to complete the tour of the southern work- ings, where the return current of air would unmistakably indicate whether fire was still raging in any part of the mine. Just before three o'clock other men reported most favourably regarding the condition of the southern workings, but when they added that no sign of life was discovered all hope was abandoned, and it was felt that it only remained to bring out the dead bodies from the northern section. Suddenly, how- ever, a flame of hope was re-kindled. The men who had entered the northern workings to pursue their search, this time numbering 40 men, led by Mr. Scott and other mine managers, together with Inspectors, Messrs. Mellor and Wilson accompanied them, taking spades, stretchers, and other appliances. While these horribly significant preparations were in progress, and were being watched with painful suspense, a signal bell from below indicated that a miner had been found alive, and medical aid was hastily summoned and the descent of the doctors, Wood and Sellers, revived the hopes of the anxious watchers. A little later the under manager, Crossley, was brought to the surface and shouted the order for blankets, hot water bottles, and brandy. What had hitherto been an awe- stricken and silent throng was immediately con- verted into a wildly cheering multitude, whose elation was in striking contrast to the silent grief which preceded it. The people attempted to crowd around the pit's mouth and threatened, in the excess of their enthusiasm, to seriously hamper the operations of the officials. Some 20 minutes elapsed before the poor fellow was brought from below. His name is said to be Henry Wrathmell. His face was greatly dis- coloured, and he was to all appearance dead, but for the moment after coming into the broad light of day he opened his eyes and then relapsed* iuto unconsciousness. He wa3 carried to the lamp- house, and ere long a second living miner was brought out and conveyed to the engiue-house. It is now confidently hoped that the loss of life may be less serious than was at first supposed, though still terrible in extent. The following telegram was received by Mr. Wardell, Chief Inspector of Mines for the West Riding District, from the Home Secretary, this evening : —
l am commanded by Her Majesty to express her deep sympathy and condolence with all the sufferers from the terrible catastrophe, and her desire that all particulars may be furnished to her as soon as possible
On account of the deplorable disaster at Thorn- hiU the festivities in connection with the Royal wedding have been abandoned in the district. The whole of the workpeople belonging to the firm of M. Newsome, Sons, and Spedding, Aldams Mill, have decided to work this afternoon, and give their respective wages for the half-day to the colliery disaster fund, and at the same firm's ironworks viz., Anchor Foundry, the whole of the workpeople have decided to do the same.
On Wednesday afternoon a public meeting, convened by the chairman of the Thornhill Local Board, took place at the Boardroom, Thornhill Mr. Brown presided, and amongst those present were the Bishop of Wakefield, Archdeacon Brooke, the Mayor of Dewsbury, the Rector of Thornhill, &c. The chairman referred to the dreadful calamity, and said that it was only intended to have a formal meeting and to adjourn, owing to Mr. Ingham, the proprietor of the colliery, not having yet arrived. Resolutions were then adopted appointing ali present a Relief Committee, with Mr. Brown as chairman, and the Rector of Thornhill and the Mayor of Dewsbury were appointed as first treasurers. The Mayor of Dewsbnrv announced that he had received £50 from Lord Ripon and £20 from Lord Compton towards the fund. The meeting adjourned nntil to-day.
