Mr. Maitland yesterday held an inquest, at Thornhill on the body of Geo. Wm. Lodge, deputy at the Combs Colliery, who was killed by a fail of roof
He had fired a shot according to the regulations, and it appeared to have shaken the rock above, for when he went with a miner named Goldthorpe to ascertain what effect the shot had had, a mass of store fell, killing him instantly and injuring his companion.
The jury, in returning verdict of “Accidental death,” said no blame attached to any one. Goldthorpe is recovering. .5 His estate was probated on 11 February 1907 at Wakefield, Yorkshire. The estate was valued at £721 9s 9d.4

Edward HALSTED

#15179, b. 1823, d. 16 December 1866
Last Edited=15 Mar 2015
Edward was also known as Edward HUNTER.
Edward HALSTED was born in 1823 at Brighton, Sussex.
Edward married Sarah TOWN, daughter of William TOWN and Sarah WILLIAMS, on 13 April 1846 at St Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex. He was a Plasterer of full age, a bachelor residing 2 Hanover Place. His father is not named. By Banns. The marriage was witnessed by William TOWN and Elizabeth TOWN.1,2
In the census of 30 March 1851 at 3 Rose Hill East, Brighton, Sussex, Edward was listed as aged 26 born Brighton, the Head of Household; a Painter, living with his wife Sarah.3
In the census of 7 April 1861 at 5 Rose Hill East, Brighton, Sussex, Edward was listed as aged 36 born Brighton, the Head of Household; a Painter, living with his wife Sarah, visitor Sarah CHATFIELD, aunt Harriett HUNTER.4

Research Note: it is unclear as to why Edward and Sarah appear on the census returns for 1851 and 1861 as HUNTER and not HALSTED. His death in 1866 is from the same address as the 1861 census and is registered by Harriet HUNTER the aunt fom the 1861 census.

Edward and Sarah's marriage clearly has his name as HALSTED and the marriage of Sarah in 1876 is again clearly in the name. The term Painter in the census returns could be misleading and I did wonder if he was a portrait painter using an assumed name but his death certificate shows him as a House Painter.
Edward died on 16 December 1866 at Brighton, Sussex. Sex - Male / Aged - 43 Year / Occupation - Journeyman House Painter / Cause of death - Rheumatic Gout 3 years - certfiied / Informant - Harriet HUNTER, In attendance, 5 Rose Hill East, Brighton / Registered - 17 December 1866.5,6
