In the census of 5 April 1891 at 22 Laycock Street, Leeds, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as aged 8 born Lincoln, Lincolnshire, the son of James HALSTEAD.2 In the census of 31 March 1901, he was listed as single, a Private, aged 19 born Lincoln, Lincolnshire, a soldier in the Infantry Barracks, Fulford Road, York, Yorkshire, England.3
Joseph married Mary Ann BURNS on 25 August 1906 at All Saints, Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England. He was a Tanner aged 23, a bachelor residing at Sackville Street, Ravensthorpe. Joseph died on 22 December 1915 at St Omer, Pas de Calais, France. He is commemorated in the Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery,France. He was awarded the British, Victory and 15 Star medals.8

Research Note: The soldiers effects record shows that Joseph left everything to the guardian of his son Joseph Henry HALSTEAD. this supports the fact that his wife was already dead.
