Appears in a newspaper article on on 29 December 1934 at at Lancashire, England, CORONER’S ADVICE TO DOCTORS
Care in Completion of Certificates
COLNE MAN’S DEATH
ADVICE to doctors about the completion of death certificates was given by the East Lancashire Coroner (Mr. F. Rowland), who sat with a jury at Colne, to-day, to investigate the death of Rennie Crabtree (57), stonemason, 14, Hargreaves-street. Colne.
"At the back of every death certificate," he said, there a space provided in which medical men have to put their initials, to show that they have reported the death to the Coroner. If a medical man for some reason or other does not attach his initials there is a trap which the registrar might unwittingly allow to go through without investigation. I do hope that medical men in this district will pay more attention to what are very obviously their duties.
"This case has fortunately been discovered by a very vigilant registrar of births and deaths. A certificate was issued by a medical man giving the cause of death as silicosis. The certificate went to the registrar, and had she not known that silicosis was an industrial disease very serious consequences would have happened. If the death had been registered there would perforce have had to be an exhumation of the man’s body. Fortunately the registrar spotted it, and therefore the inquest is oeing held.”
MEDICAL TREATMENT
John Henry Crabtree, clothlooker, said the dead man, who was his brother, was married, but had not lived with his wife for the past four years. Ten years ago he was a healthy man, but he had suffered from bronchitis and had been periodically attended by a doctor.
About July, 1931, he went to the Withnell Sanatorium, where he remained for nine weeks, and in December. 1933, he was admitted to the Burnley Municipal Hospital, where he stayed for nine days. In the past seven years his brother had worked as a stonemason for several firms, being last employed by the Colne Corporation, and from March 10th. 1932, he had received compensation from the Colne Corporation, by arrangement with the Silicosis Board.
Dr. Aitken, police surgeon, who made a post mortem examination, attributed death to silicosis, due to exposure to silica dust.
The Coroner, addressing the jury, said that in the event of any death being caused by silicosis the matter had to be investigated. If the man died from silicosis due exposure to silica dust it was an industrial disease, and the verdict must be one of "Accidental death.”
The jury returned verdict of "Accidental death.”.6
