A very quiet and pretty wedding was solemnised at St. Stephen’s Church on Tuesday afternoon, May 17, when Miss Nellie, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Metcalf, of Todmorden, England, was married to Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Halstead, also of Todmorden, England. The Rev. W. Kelly performed the ceremony. The bride, who was given away by her uncle, Mr. James Metcalf looked very nice in a simple frock of harvest repp, with pretty hat to match. She carried a beautiful shower bouquet of gold-coloured chrysanthemums and maiden hair ferns. The bridesmaids were Miss A. Simpson (Hawera) chief, and Miss Elsie Young, the former wearing a pretty frock of powder blue marocain, with hat to match, and the latter a frock of accordean-pleated fawn repp, with fawn hat. Each carried beautiful bouquets to tone. The duties of best man were carried out by Mr. C. Wyatt, New Plymouth. The gifts of the bridegroom were, to the bride a gold wristlet watch, and to the bridesmaids pearl necklets. After the ceremony a reception was held at the residence of the bride’s uncle, Mrs. Metcalf wearing a frock of black repp with Oriental trimmings. The usual toasts were duly honoured. Later in the afternoon the bride and bridegroom left for the north, the bride wearing a brown ensemble coat with smart close-fitting hat. The presents were numerous and pretty, a number coming from England.6 Thomas Rigby HALSTEAD travelled to London, England, on 27 April 1932.
