Research Note: CRIPPLED EX-SOLDIER'S CASE
DESERTION CHARGE DISMISSED
An soldier with a disabled left hand figured as defendant in a wife desertion case which the Borough Magistrates were called upon to decide at the Police Court on Wednesday He was John Halstead (28) residing in Cuerdale-street, Harle Syke. His wife, Florrie, alleged that he deserted her on his discharge from hospital at Liverpool in September last. Mr. W. Mossop appeared for complainant, and Mr. J C. Waddingtondefended.
According to Mr Mossop's statement to the Bench, the parties were married on March 19th, 1912, at Ebenezer Chapel, and there was one child, a boy now six years old. Defendant went into the Army 1915, when the couple were linng in Ardwick-street. He was finally discharged from hospital on November 4th last year, but be did not resume cohabitation with his wife, and instead of going home to her went to his mother's house. There was something alleged against lier, but she said it was absolutely without foundation. Since that time he had sent her various sum# —17s 6d. per week for three weeks, then dropped it to 10s., which sent for six weeks, and later lowered again 7s. On the 28th January, however, he stopped the payments, and had sent her nothing since. The wife had written three times to him since his discharge from hospital asking him, if was not prepared to return to her, what he was goinn to do.
Complainant, who lives at 53, Grey-street, Burnley, bore out her aolicitor's statement.—ln cross-examination by Mr. Waddington, she denied that she "had had a good time" whilst her husband was away, that had associated with men.
In reply to Mr Waddington admitted writing a number of abusive letters to her whilst he was in hospital, in one of which she said she had finished with him. She now said she also wrote the letters in a temper and did not mean what she wrote. They were in reply to letters he had written to her, which had been destroyed.
Re-examined by Mr Mossop, she denied all suggestions made by Mr Waddington as to her conduct with other men.
Mr Waddington submitted to the bench that there was no case of desertion proved, and even if there was desertion it was not without "resonable and probable cause".
The bench said there would be no order, and the case would be dismissed.6 John HALSTEAD and Florrie BULLOCK were divorced between 1913 and 1939. William ECCLES

#8646, b. 11 November 1884
Last Edited=9 May 2016
William was also known as Willie HALSTEAD.

Research Note: a tree in the public trees on Ancestry states that there is no father listed on his birth certificate and that he was brought up be William HALSTEAD.
There is also a note on the baptism record that he was baptised as the son of John and Mary Ann SHACKELTON - but they were his grandparents!
Looking at the ages of John and Mary Ann in the 1891 census it would be unlikely for William to have been theirs.
William ECCLES was born on 11 November 1884 at Burnley, Lancashire.1 He was the son of Hannah ECCLES. In the census of 31 March 1901 at 10 Moss Street, Burnley, Lancashire, he was listed as single, a Bakers Labourer, aged 16 born Burnley, the son of William HALSTEAD.2

Research Note: James and Elizabeth never married
In the 1891 Census the household is very badly written and I suspect that the enumerator struggled to read James's handwritting. It is also possible that James made a mess so as to hide his identity.
In the census of 5 April 1891 at 110 Briercliffe Road, Burnley, Lancashire, James was listed as marred, aged 35 born Burnley, the Head of Household; a Carter, living with his son Halstead, servant Elizabeth Ann WINCHESTER, her children Henry Halstead Winchester and Mary WINCHESTER (both were James's illegitimate children.)6 In the census of 31 March 1901 at 2 Simpson Street, Burnley, Lancashire, he was listed as married, a Labourer in Iron Foundry, aged 46 born Burnley, a Boarder of Sarah WHITAKER.7
