DESERTION CHARGE DISMISSED
An soldier with a disabled left hand figured as defendant in a wife desertion case which the Borough Magistrates were called upon to decide at the Police Court on Wednesday He was John Halstead (28) residing in Cuerdale-street, Harle Syke. His wife, Florrie, alleged that he deserted her on his discharge from hospital at Liverpool in September last. Mr. W. Mossop appeared for complainant, and Mr. J C. Waddingtondefended.
According to Mr Mossop's statement to the Bench, the parties were married on March 19th, 1912, at Ebenezer Chapel, and there was one child, a boy now six years old. Defendant went into the Army 1915, when the couple were linng in Ardwick-street. He was finally discharged from hospital on November 4th last year, but be did not resume cohabitation with his wife, and instead of going home to her went to his mother's house. There was something alleged against lier, but she said it was absolutely without foundation. Since that time he had sent her various sum# —17s 6d. per week for three weeks, then dropped it to 10s., which sent for six weeks, and later lowered again 7s. On the 28th January, however, he stopped the payments, and had sent her nothing since. The wife had written three times to him since his discharge from hospital asking him, if was not prepared to return to her, what he was goinn to do.
Complainant, who lives at 53, Grey-street, Burnley, bore out her aolicitor's statement.—ln cross-examination by Mr. Waddington, she denied that she "had had a good time" whilst her husband was away, that had associated with men.
In reply to Mr Waddington admitted writing a number of abusive letters to her whilst he was in hospital, in one of which she said she had finished with him. She now said she also wrote the letters in a temper and did not mean what she wrote. They were in reply to letters he had written to her, which had been destroyed.
Re-examined by Mr Mossop, she denied all suggestions made by Mr Waddington as to her conduct with other men.
Mr Waddington submitted to the bench that there was no case of desertion proved, and even if there was desertion it was not without "resonable and probable cause".
The bench said there would be no order, and the case would be dismissed.⁷ John HALSTEAD and Florrie BULLOCK were divorced between 1913 and 1939. Mrs Smith, who was 52 years of age, had suffered from heart trouble for many years. She was a member of the bridge room at the Mechames' Institution, and until her health necessitated her giving up the work she was a member of the Women's Electrical Association. She was a daughter of Robert Halstead, on the the celebrated walking party associated the the Mechanic's Institution and a niece of Mr Edmund Halstead J.P. In addition to her husband she is survived by a son, who recently qualified as a doctor, and a daughter. The funeral will take place on Monday in Burnley Cemetery at 1.15.⁹ Her estate was given Letters of Administration on 26 May 1944 at Llandudno, Conway, Wales. The estate was valued at £316 14s 10d.⁸

Edmund Halstead, J.P , the chairman of the Governors of the Victoria Hospital, Burnley, was married on Thuraday morning, at the Church of St. Mary's, Spring Grove, near Isleworth (London), to Miss Emma Prydderch Williams, of California, whom he met on his recent world cruise.
The wedding was a yery quiet one, being attended only by a few personal friends. Mr. Halstead arrived at the church just before eleven, accompanied by his nephew, Mr. Alfred Nelson Halstead, son of Mr. R. Halstead, of Burnley, Punctually at eleven the bride, wearing a black satin coat and hat, arrived with Mrs. Prydderch Williams, who is her aunt by marriage, and with whom she has been staying for the past few weeks at Myfyrion. London-road, Osterley, and her cousin, Mrs. Ashby. The family is a Quaker one.
The Vicar of St. Mary's, the Rev. H. W. Weatherhead, officiated the ceremony, and after a family luncheon party at the Victoria Hotel, Mr. and Mrs. Halstead left for Bournemouth. where they are spending a few weeks preparatory settling down in Burnley.⁴

Mr. Halstead is on the staff of the Surveyor's Department of the Urban District Council of Finchley, London. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. H. James, M.A., LL.B., B.D., of Ilford, London, assisted by the Rev. Stanley Luke, and Mr. H. Rycroft played appropriate music on the organ. Mr. W. Pollard, B.Sc., friend of the bridegroom, was best man, and Miss Doris Swift, friend of the bride, was bridesmaid.
The bride was attired in a charming gown of ivory georgette, trimmed with silver, with bridal veil and wreath of orange blossom, and she carried bouquet of yellow tea roses and white heather. She also wore a gold slave bangle which was a gift from the bridegroom. Miss Swift was dressed in blue georgette over pink, and carried a bouquet of sweet peas. Mrs. Harris, the bride's mother, wore navy blue crepe de Chine, and Mrs. Halstead, the bridegroom's mother, a pretty gown of black and silver.
The bride's present to the bridegroom was a travelling case, and the bridegroom's gift to the bridesmaid was a string of pearls.
