William HALSTEAD

Research Note: I am fairly certain that this is the correct William HALSTEAD who married Mary WHITE.

It is interesting that the marriage was by "Superintendant Registrar Certificate" rather than Banns. Need to investigate further what this actually meant - was it simply an alternative to a Licence or Banns? After all St Chad wasn't exactly a small church

William and Mary seem to have gone their seperate ways after the birth of George.

It is also interesting that William and not Mary registered the birth of the child albeit rather late. This was before the standard 42 days that was introduced in 1874.
William HALSTEAD was born in 1836 at Spotland, Lancashire. He was the son of Robert HALSTEAD and Alice STARKIE. In the census of 6 June 1841 at Call, Colne, Lancashire, he was listed as aged 6 born in county, the assumed son of Robert HALSTEAD.1 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Smelt, Spotland, Lancashire, he was listed as single, a Cotton Piecer, aged 15 born Spotland, the son of Robert HALSTEAD.2
William married Mary WHITE on 12 March 1855 at St Chad, Rochdale, Lancashire. He was a Minder aged 21, a bachelor residing in Underbank. His father was listed as Robert HALSTEAD, a Weaver. Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church, by Superintendant Registrar Certificate. The marriage was witnessed by James GRIME and Nancy HALSTEAD.3,4 In the census of 7 April 1861 at Hogshead, Spotland, Lancashire, he was listed as single, an Agricultural Labourer, aged 23 born Bacup, a Boarder of John WHITTLES.5 In the census of 3 April 1881 at Lumb Hall, Spotland, Lancashire, he was listed as single, a Railway Porter, aged 43 born Bacup, a Boarder of George BEEBLE.6 In the census of 5 April 1891 at Higher Hogshea Farm, Spotland, Lancashire, he was listed as single, a Farm Labourer, aged 52 born Bacup, a Boarder of William LORD.7 In the census of 31 March 1901, he was listed as single, an imbicile, a Goods Porter, aged 63 born Bacup, an Inmate in the Burnley Union Workhouse, Briercliffe Road, Burnley, Lancashire.8
William's death was registered in 1906 in the Burnley registration district.9
