The wedding was a yery quiet one, being attended only by a few personal friends. Mr. Halstead arrived at the church just before eleven, accompanied by his nephew, Mr. Alfred Nelson Halstead, son of Mr. R. Halstead, of Burnley, Punctually at eleven the bride, wearing a black satin coat and hat, arrived with Mrs. Prydderch Williams, who is her aunt by marriage, and with whom she has been staying for the past few weeks at Myfyrion. London-road, Osterley, and her cousin, Mrs. Ashby. The family is a Quaker one.

FARMER'S FUNERAL Amidst every manifestation of regret the funeral took place on Wednesday at the Burnley Cemetery, of the late Mr. Hartley Halstead, of New Field Farm, who died at the early age of 33 years. The funeral was of a quiet nature, only immediate relatives and a few intimate friends being present. Prior to the departure from the house Mr P T Tuerat conducted a short service. The Rev J. H. Brown officiated at the graveside. Among a large number of floral tributes was a wreath from the Burnley Farmers Association - -Mr Hy. Marshall, of Spencers House. Mr. E. W. Norris, district coroner, held an inquiry at the Union Workhouse last Saturday morning into the death of Jane Halstead (64), of Golden Row Farm, Heptonstall, who died in the hospital on Wednesday of last week.
Emma Sutcliffe, daughter, said she had lived with deceased at the above address. Her mother was formerly a weaver, but had not worked for several years as she had been in poor health. Some years ago she had a stroke, from the effects of which she never fully recovered. In January she was attended by Dr. Dowdall, as she had practically lost the use of her right side. During the last week in March she had four falls, and on the 30th she fell whilst witness was in another room. Witness heard her fall and on running into the room found that she had crept on her knees to a cradle in order to attend to the baby. She then crept back to the table and tried to get up but was unable to do so. She told witness that she had seen the baby trying to get out the cradle, so she Jumped up in a hurry, upsetting the buffet on which she was sitting, and falling heavily. Witness added that with the assistance of a neighbour she got her mother into a chair and sent for the doctor, who found that she had dislocated her hip. On the next day deceased was taken to the Workhouse Hospital, as the doctor said she needed watching night and day. Deceased had complained of dizziness for a week or two. A few years ago she had had an epileptic seizure.
Dr. Thorp: Deceased told me she had had a fall Burnley, and hurt her leg.—Witness agreed that she had had a fall, but was not aware that she had hurt herself, adding that she had walked badly for the past twenty years.
Giving evidence, Dr. Thorp said that deceased was admitted to hospital on March 31st, When he saw her on the following day she was semi-conscious but not conscious of any pain. There was about two inches of shortening in the right leg, with bruises the right hip and left thigh. There was a fracture of the neck of the femur, and he came to the conclusion, after treatment, that this was of many years' standing. The present trouble was due to cerebral hemorrhage. She had developed some bed sores and died on May 3rd. The cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage, due to senile degeneration of the arteries.
The Coroner gave his verdict in accordance with the above.⁹

An inquest was held yesterday (Tuesday) at the Town Hall before the Deputy Coroner (Mr. B. Bedford. of Newhaven) on the body of Hartley Halstead. The jury included Messrs. D Dilly (foreman). G. Wiseman. D. T. Wilson, B. Holland. T. M. Dicker. A. Macpherson. Davis, B.W Alderton, Isaac Adams, Griggs, G. Bainbridge. and T. Hazell.
Henry Gover. young man, said—l am a gardener and live at 7, Park Terrace. Deceased was a carpenter, and I had known him for about four months. He was 29 years old, unmarried, and worked for Mr. Taylor, the builder. At twenty minutes to one on Sunday afternoon he was on the Parade, land was taken into the Victoria Inn. He was afterwards brought home in the cab. He was very pale, and there was a sickly, deathly odour about him. He died four or five minutes before the doctor arrived. Deceased was not drunkard, and was not a moderate drinker. He was what I should call a heavy moderate drinker.
Dr Charles Lenox Cunningham said—About twenty minutes to two on Sunday afternoon I was called to see deceased at 7 Park Terrace, Commercial-road. I found him lying on his back in his bed. He was quite dead, and it appeared that he had vomited. I made a post mortem examination last night. On opening the head in found considerable effusion beneath the anachroid membrane and the vessels very much distended with venous blood. The liver was consideraby enlarged and the stomach was distended with a large quantity of liquid. The heart was small and flabby and probably did not weigh one half the natural weight. On the right aide of the heart tha auricle and ventricle were gorged with blood. I attribute the cause of death to congestive apoplexy, due to defective action of the heart.
The Coroner—Would the appearance of the heart lead you to suppose that the man had been guilty of alcoholic excess.
Witness—Exactly.
Ben Charles Hide (a boatman) and workman named Hollebon depoded to deceased falling in a fit near the Victoria Inn, and being removed in a cab to his borne.

A LINK wlth old Preston has been broken by the death in Canada of Mrs. Thomas Halstead. aged 80. who for 36 years was postmistress of the quaintly-named town of Nokomis. Her sister. Mrs. L I. Cank, still lives In the Preston district, at the home of her daughter, Mrs E. D. Marsden. of The Oaks, Cottom-lane Longton.
Mrs Halstead and Mrs Cank were grand-daughters of Mr. Lawrence Dobson, who was at first partner of Mr. Isaac Wilcockson in ownership of the old "Preston Chronicle,” and later- sole proprietor of this newspaper, which was Incorporated In ’The Preston Guardian in 1894. Lawrence Dobson, lived at Sion Hill, Rlbbleton, ana an old photograph Mrs. Marsden has shows him surrounded by his family.
The Halsteads emigrated to Canada In 1904. Thomas Halstead “filed" on a homestead two miles east of the present town of Nokomis in 1905. He made the trip on horseback, later bringing his family up by ox-drawn waggon In 1906.
Mrs. Halstead called the farm "Nokomis" (from Longfellow's "Hiawatha") opened a post office there In 1906. and later saw a town named after her first real Canadian home.¹⁰
