Thomas was thrown to the ground and sustained injury to his 'right hand. The horse took fright, and bolted along Church-street, Colne-road, into Briercliffe Road, where is was ultimately stopped. Official word was received by his parents on Friday morning that Private Albert Halstead, 133, Barden-lane, Burnley, had been killed in action. The late Private Halstead joined the 11th East Lancashires six weeks after war broke ouht. He was 22 years of age, and before the war worked at Alderman Emmott's mill. He was attached to the Burnley Lads' Club, in connection with which he held several offices.His elder brother, Private Harry Halstead, is in the Royal Engineers. His uncle, Private Ben Halstead, a Burnley Canadian, was taken prisoner on June 8th. Another uncle, Private John Edward Griffiths, is at present in Egypt. Private Halstead was brought up at St. Andrew's Church and School, and a memorial service will be held for him on Sunday morning.
Two regimental friends of his, Bernard Halstead and J Sullivan, in a letter to Mrs. Halstead, dated Monday, July 17th, say:- By the time you get this letter you will most likety have been informed of the death of your son. Albert, who was killed in action on July 1st. We made inquiries after the attack, and the last we could get to of him being alive was that he was with a small party bombing in the German first line. We know the loss to you is great, but you will know he died doing his duty. He will be missed by us out here, as he was one of the best, always cheerful and ready with a joke when we were feeling fed-up."

Needham, and Miss. Edith Halstead (niece), while Mr. Harold Pickles, the bridegroom's brother, carried out the duties "best man." The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr. Wm. Halstead, of Nelson, wore a dress of white silk crepe de chine, worked with beads, and a wreath of orange blossom and embroidered veil. The bridesmaids were attired in pink silk crepe de chine and ooffee-ooloured silk. Mr. Tom Procter played suitable music on the newly-installed organ. The ceremony was performed by Councillor W. B. Thornber. After the ceremony the guests were entertained to tea 'in the schoolroom, the remainder of the day being spent in singing, games, etc. Mr. and Mrs. Pickles many beautiful and useful presents. The honeymoon is being spent at Aberystwyth.2

Mr Halstead, 3 Hope Street, Nelson, was yesterday officially informed of the death of his son, Pts. Frank Horden Halstead who served with the 5th Batt. East Lancashire Regt. (t.F.) The notification states that Pte. Halstead died at sea on August 8th from wounds received in action. He was 23 years of age, and was for many years a choir boy at St. Mary's Church, Nelson, and was well known in the town. He joined the East Lancashires along with his brother, Pte. Arthur Cecil Halstead, at the beginning of last September, and was drafted to the Dardanelles, in April. On Monday Mr. Halstead received a letter from his son Arthur stating Frank had been wounded in the thigh, but that the injury was only slight. Deceased was formerly employed as a weaver at Meears. Wm. Ecroyd and Sons' Lomeshaye Mills.
