This struck him on the head and fractured his skull. Cessnock District Coroner (Mr. W. S. Johnston) held an inquiry at Greta Camp this week. His verdict was of accidental death.4

Yesterday Mr. Wm. Barstow, Coroner, held an inquest at the Griffin Inn, Barkialand, on Robert Jagger, aged thirty-one years next birthday, plasterer, of Beestonlay Lane, Stainland, who lost his life in the great fire at Barkialand Mill on Wednesday, the 6th inst The remains consisted of one large bone, to which some flesh attached, and a number of pieces of bone; and along with them were a key, part of a pipe, and the metal from deceased's braces and clogs. Sir Charles Firth, President of the National Fire Brigade Association, was present; and Mr. Nicholson, surgeon, Stainland, attended as certifying surgeon for the district The evidence was to the effect that deceased, whilst throwing water on an inner wall between the two mills, was overwhelmed in the ruins, the gable of the large mill falling through the roof of the smaller. This gable had been noticed to unsafe, and the men assisting in the mill were warned of this both by Mr. Miles Bottomley, Mr. Eneas Bottomley.and Police-constable Southern. Deceased waa identified by the key, which had been given to him by John Collins, painter, Stainland. The lock was produced to which it belonged. Sir Charles Firth corrected a mistaken notion, which he said was prevalent, that persons engaged in extinguishing fire who suffered could obtain compensation under the Employers' Liability Act, pointing out that there must be culpable negligence on the part of the employers, and not merely an accident. Unless Messrs. Bottomley had cautioned the men about the wall there would have been gross blame attributable to them, but they had cleared themselves because they cautioned them; and the police cautioned them.—The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death." A subscription is being got up for the unfortunate man's family.5

THIS is another of those "local boy makes good" stories.
When Harry Halstead was a kid of 12 he attended Bradshaw Street Council School and Regent Street Methodist Sunday School. Then, 24 years ago, with his parents and sister Joan, he emigrated to New Zealand, continued his education and finally made the grade at Wellington University. Graduating, he joined the Civil Service, but later transferred to the New Zealand Police Force—and by the time he. was 26 years of age he was Superintendent in charge of the Fiji Islands.
Supt. Halstead, now in his 37th year, is at present re-visiting England for the first time. He came over on the " Dominion Monarch" and disembarked at Southampton on August 12th. Purpose of his visit is to take a refresher course at Scotland Yard, and he expects to be in England a few months. He will, of course, take the first opportunity to visit friends and relations in his home town, and whilst in Nelson will be staying with Mr. E. Lonsdale, Oak Villa, Carr Hall.
Fiji is a British colony consisting of an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean; the islands number about 250 of which some 80 are inhabited. The formation of the larger islands is volcanic, their surface rugged, their vegetation luxuriant, and their appearance very beautiful.
Our photograph, which shows the Supt. (in helmet) escorting the Governor of Fiji on a tour of inspection, gives some idea of the Pacific surroundings.
Superintendent Halstead is the son of Mrs. and the late Mr. Gordon Halstead, who, prior to emigrating, kept a tobacconist shop at 85 Scotland Road.2
