In the census of 6 June 1841 at Croft Street, Whalley, Lancashire, she was listed as aged 6 born in county, the assumed daughter of Hargreaves HALSTEAD.3 In the census of 30 March 1851 at 1 Croft Street, Burnley, Lancashire, she was listed as single, a Dressmaker, aged 15 born Burnley, the daughter of Hargreaves HALSTEAD.4 In the census of 7 April 1861 at 66 Trafalgar Street, Habergham Eaves, Lancashire, she was listed as single, a Milliner, aged 25 born Burnley, the daughter of Sarah HALSTEAD.5 In the census of 2 April 1871 at 1 Holm Terrace, Blatchinworth, Lancashire, she was listed as single, a Cotton Weaver, aged 36 born Rochdale, a Lodger of John KERSHAW.6

Research Note: I am certain that this is the right person that married John HARTLEY. There is only one Hargreaves HALSTEAD of the right ageto have a daughter to be able to marry John. However there is a 10 year gap between her actual age and the age on the marriage certificate.
Mary married John HARTLEY on 20 December 1883 at St Peter, Bradford, Yorkshire.She was aged 36, a spinster residing in Lilycroft Road, Manningham. Her father was listed as Hargreaves HALSTEAD, a Cooper. By Licence. The marriage was witnessed by George GOODALL, Agnes Ann GOODALL and Anne Elizabeth HARDAKER.1,2

Margaret Halstead, aged 15 years, 4, St. Paul's-square, weaver, was found drowned in the Leeds and Liverpool canal, at half-past five o'clock on Friday morning week. Deceased had worked the factory of Mr. Smith, Stanley Street, and left with other hands. The deceased, it is said, had been behind with her work, and observed to some of her fellow operatives that she would not return. That was on the 10th inst., and she was not seen subsequently until her body was found in the canal. The face was somewhat discoloured. An inquest was held on Monday, and these facts having been deposed to, the jury returned a verdict of " Found drowned."4,5
